About

London Canal Museum - See a Different London

Central London museum of London's waterways and the Victorian ice trade, set in a former Victorian ice warehouse. The museum tells the colourful story of London's canals, their people, cargoes, boats and horses. Exhibitions cover the social history of the canals, the pivotal role of horse power, the Regent's Canal, lifting and handling, roses and castles canal decoration, and the engineering of the waterways. On two waterside floors, the charming building is part of the visit, being a former ice warehouse. You can peer down into an ice well and see an exhibition about this half-forgotten industry.

Disabled Visitors Welcome

The museum is fully accessible to disabled visitors. There are lifts that link both floors so that wheelchair users and the less mobile can easily get around, and step-free access at the front and rear. Both main and rear doors are power operated. Exhibitions are designed with the wheelchair user in mind, and there are low-level versions of exhibitions that might otherwise be difficult to appreciate.

For hearing-impaired visitors we offer an induction loop at reception and sub-titles are provided on all our video content. There are transcripts of some of the audio content.

For the visually-impaired, we offer a specially designed audio tour of the museum. There are handrails, ribbed floor mats, and contrasting stair nosings.

All our exhibitions of recent years have been designed to provide a simple introduction that is suitable for those with a learning disability as well as those for whom English is a second language.

Venue Hire

The museum is an attractive and affordable venue for a variety of private functions and events. In a charming waterside building with a magnificent Victorian timber roof, we host parties, wedding receptions, launches, conferences, awards ceremonies, dinners and business receptions. There is capacity for up to 160 delegates seated theatre-style, up to 120 for a dinner, and up to 80 for a cabaret-style conference. We host these larger events in the evening on any day of the week, and during the daytime on Mondays only. We also host breakfast meetings on any day of the week.

We also have a small meeting room available any day, any time, to accommodate up to 20 delegates, theatre-style, or up to 12 delegates, boardroom-style.This offers a highly economical meeting room in a central London location with self-service tea/coffee/biscuits and Wi-Fi Internet access included in the price. It is ideal for board or committee meetings where delegates need to come together from around the country.

Our fantastic location is a huge advantage because we are just five minutes' walk from King's Cross station, one of the largest transport interchanges in Europe. St.Pancras, Euston, and Caledonian Road and Barnsbury (Overground) stations are within easy walking distance. It is therefore possible to walk to/from the station and catch a through train to Paris, Bruxelles, Newcastle, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, Sheffield, Nottingham, Canterbury, Brighton, Heathrow Airport, Gatwick Airport, Luton Airport Parkway, and most parts of London. There are numerous local bus services. We also have our own mooring on the Regent's Canal and groups can arrive or depart by boat.

We are well equipped and well-experienced in all sorts of events.
