Good fun, lively atmosphere...

I've known few restaurants more able to polarise opinion than Langans. Just recently the reviewing deity that is AA Gill gave it a savaging of such severity in The Sunday Times that is is a wonder that it is still open. Maybe it is testament to the lack of critics real inflence or the eternal pulling power of Langans that it was as full and buzzing as ever last week when I visited for lunch. As with any review there are always parts that ring true and parts with which you either wholeheartedly concur or disagree with. Adrian Gill mentioned the service as having a "servile dismissiveness" and being "perfunctory". We experienced both during our visit. We ordered then asked the waiter if he could hold off on our "Mains" as we had just been called by a friend who was running late. The "Mains" duly arrived without any warning and were sent away along with the haughty waiter. The manager duly arrived and apologised and the service magically switched to efficient and friendly - maybe they're learning. The food was good without being special, the Fish and Chips were not in the same league as The Fat Duck, but virtually nowhere is to be fair and the Sea Bass was a touch over-cooked. Everything comes at a price and for this meal in this establishment you don't expect much change and you get none.I don't know what atmosphere AA Gill was wanting but his ostentatious sniping snobbery doesn't become him - yes there were the usual "middle management drones" but also some very agreeable company as well that made it go swingingly. Some of the old magic is there, if none of the celebrity stardust, but it's still a good destination on any lunchtime to while away a couple of hours with friends.

We visited Langans late one Saturday afternoon before going to the theatre. I have to say it was everything I thought it would be. The food was cooked to perfection and the service attentive but not over the top.For starters my husband had black pudding with warm potato, bacon and apple salad and I had mushrooms with bacon and lancashire cheese . For mains my husband had roast duck with a sage and onion stuffing and I had roasted fillet of sea bass with fennel and butter sauce. We couldn't manage a pudding but shared the cheese and biscuits. The whole dining experience was fabulous.

I'd forgotten about this place until I was taken by a client for lunch recently. It's old school, simple food cooked very well. Nice and buzzy atmosphere, a great bloody mary and the best fish and chips i think I've ever had.I've been back twice since.

With a french retro look of Parisian brasserie, Langan plays on the posh side but the food is honest and good, with a gentle and diligent service.

Located just off Piccadilly, next to Green Park tube station, Langans Brasserie has been packing them in for over 25 years. Having walked past it numerous times, we decided to give it a try for dinner one night. I must admit that I have read some pretty bad reviews about this restaurant, but we didn't have too bad an evening and I would return. The Brasserie is split over 2 levels. The decoration is kind of French/cigar room feeling and the clientele seemed to be mainly work colleagues/business men and a smattering of tourists. We ate in the large ground floor room, where the walls are covered with fairly ugly pictures/paintings. Service was professional although a little hap-hazard, and had to ask twice for the bill and then wait for ages for it to arrive. The restaurant was full and it was VERY noisy - not a place for a romantic meal. Also, smoking is allowed throughout which is always a minus in my book.Langans cuisine is Anglo/French, and we did really enjoy the food. We shared the Smoked Duck Salad to start which was delicious and well presented. For main course I had Cod & Chips - the chips were delicious, and my other half had a very tasty Roast Partridge. He was particularly impressed that there was tiny bits of 'gun shot' in the meat - meaning that the bird had been shot as opposed to farmed.Dessert's sounded too good to miss…..and I picked a real winner - the Treacle Tart was AMAZING!! One of the tastiest desserts I have had in a long time....worth going back again for just for that!
