Great ambience and tapas
A short walk from Green Park tube will take you to Down Street and a world away from the hustle and bustle of London, to soak up the taste of Spain.Having been to the home of tapas, Seville, I was transported back to Andalucia with the easy charm of the waiting staff and the delicious food and wine. I chose the most Andalucian dishes I could find, to pretend that I was on holiday, instead of just up the road from the office. The broad bean casserole with pancetta was delicious and the kidneys in sherry, sublime.Go on your own for a quiet lunch or take your friends - either way you can take advantage of the lunch special of 2 tapas and a glass of wine or beer for under a tenner.Muy bien!

Tapas in Mayfair
It can be hard getting a table for five people at a central London restaurant on a Saturday night when you leave it to the last minute, and when it has to be a Tapas restaurant it is harder still. After my first couple of choices weren't available, I decided to give El Pirata a try.Located in an unlikely location in Mayfair, El Pirata is split over two levels and was very busy when we arrived at 8pm. We were lead downstairs and given a table in a small private alcove - this turned out to be perfect as the restaurant is pretty noisy, and being in the alcove we were separated from most of the din. Service was friendly and attentive for the most part, though it was occasionally a bit tricky to get a waiters attention from our cosy nook.We decided to order ten tapas between the five of us, along with some olives and bread. Dishes we had included:- sardinas fritas (fried sardines in lemon, parsley & white wine)- calamares con arroz negro (black rice & squid)- croquetas de salmon (salmon croquettes)- tortilla (spanish omelette with potatoes & onions)- alas de pollo con salsa picante (chicken wings in a spicy sauce)- fabada (bean stew with chorizo sausage & pancetta)- berenjena jardinera (aubergine stuffed with vegetables & topped with cheese)- patatas a la pobre (roasted potatoes in onion, garlic & parsley)There was plenty of food for us all and it was washed down very nicely by a couple of bottles of Spanish wine from the extensive (though pricey) wine list.

Fabulous Wine, and Cocktails, or a Romantic Meal
This eatery is almost two venues in one. Entering, at street level, into a bubbly trendy wine/cocktail bar, with an extensive wine list ranging, in price, from £13 to £275 per bottle, you can choose to venture down the spiral staircase to a quieter, and more romantic, restaurant area. The menu offers a wide range of Tapas. The set or special occasion menus are always good value for money, and the grilled king prawns, in a tomato and garlic and white wine sauce, are to die for. Simply the smell of the place leads you to thinking that you've been transported to a sun drenched destination, by the sea.
