‘Damp' is the term used to refer to the presence of unwanted moisture, water and condensation present in a domestic or commercial property. Damp problems can occur easily and without warning, and can be severely harmful to a building's structure. Damp can be detected through a musty smell, or the appearance of mould, damage to decorations, wet rot or dry rot in skirting boards, roof or floor timbers. If you do detect damp in your property, fear not – Dampbuster have been dealing with damp problems for over thirty years, and are one of the UK's industry-leading damp experts, providing damp proofing, basement waterproofing, wet rot and dry rot treatment and condensation control to properties affected by damp.
Damp problems can affect any building and cause debilitating dry rot, wet rot and mould problems but more often than not, they can be attributed to poor property maintenance, poor build quality, the use of low-quality materials, or the absence or failure of an existing damp proof course. The three most common types of damp are:
Rising Damp,Penetrating Damp and Condensation
Dampbuster's skilled damp specialists are experienced in handling a diverse range of damp problems, and will conduct work not only to eliminate the damp problem but to prevent rising damp, penetrating damp and condensation from finding its way into your domestic or commercial property again.
Often, damp problems can go unnoticed. If you suspect damp problems in your property, look for these telltale signs to verify whether or not you have a damp problem:Damp, musty smell,Paint deteriorating,Damp marks around chimney breast,Plaster degrading and deteriorating
Damp stains from water and salts on walls,Damp mould visible on walls,Staining of wall coverings,Rusting on nails or screws
Identifying the following outside your home could also be indicative of a damp problem which could potentially enter the property and cause damage such as water marks on walls, salt stains on walls, crumbling mortar.
Over time, damp will cause structural problems – the presence of fungi in wood often causes wet rot and dry rot problems, which leads to the weakening of structural timber. It also provides ideal conditions for woodworm to thrive, and can cause unsightly and unhealthy mould problems to develop. The longer damp infests, the worse a woodworm, wet rot or dry rot problem will become and the greater damage caused to a property's structure.
If left untreated, damp in the home can have serious health implications. Mould, wet rot and dry rot can all release spores into the atmosphere which are harmful when inhaled, particularly to those with asthma; a condition provoked by the presence of increased moisture and condensation characteristic of damp problems.
Damp is caused by the entrance of water to a property – either through leaks in roofs, windows and doors (penetrating damp) or rising through floorboards, internal walls and external walls (rising damp).
There are steps you can take in the home to reduce the risk of damp problems:
Check windows and doors have no damage or leaks which could be allowing damp through
Remove obstructions such as leaves and weeds from roofing, guttering and drains
Make sure your home is well ventilated and air bricks are kept clear
Make sure your property is heated during winter to reduce condensation
Check outside wall at ground level for signs of damp
Maintain external ground levels at least 150mm below the damp proof course
