Beginners Sewing Classes

My speciality is teaching beginners how to sew - not just to make that dress but real old school techniques that I've learned over my lifetime of sewing experience. I've studied bridalwear, couture techniques and tailoring and bring all those professional tips into my teaching. I've learned the long slow way, and made every mistake in the book, so you don't have to. In just a few hours, I can teach you how to sew like a pro and avoid all those pitfalls common to novice sewists.

Dressmaking

I wore homemade clothes as a child, so I started to make my own clothes quite early too.. I've made just about everything from skirts, blouses, coats, & jeans - and often from copying existing garments. Fueled by my thirst for sewing knowledge I learned new techniques to improve the finish of my projects, which led to me taking courses in bridalwear, tailoring and patterncutting.

My dressmaking classes are limited to 4 students so I spend lots of one-to-one time with every one. So I can help you refine your sewing skills and achieve a good fit to your sewing projects.

Refresher Sewing

If you haven't sewn for a while and have got a bit rusty, then I can help you refresh your sewing knowledge and re-learn those common techniques. Even if it's how to wind a bobbin and thread your sewing machine, or sew a straight seam. No matter how much you've forgotten, I can help you get back up to scratch and remind you of all those tasks such as staystitching, sewing in a zip, adding a facing, when and how to press and trim, where you do understitching and lots more. This one-day workshop will give you the opportunity to make practice these techniques by making samples that you can take away with you. Soyou don't have to buy lots of fabric for a whole garment, or worry about getting the fit right too. You can just concentrate on learning to love sewing again.

Testimonials

I'm hooked. What fun creative machine embroidery is. And what a lot we covered on Essential Dressmaking Techniques. Thanks Jen for such good instructions, lots of tips based on your years of experience and your friendly fun approach. Classes are good value too. I'll be back.

Just back from spending a lovely day with Jen at Artisan Stitch. She is such a great teacher - so patient and explains everything so well. I absolutely love my wrap skirt and will wear it with pride. If you want to learn how to sew or brush up your skills, then Jen is your woman.
