Human Resource, People and Change Management - Cherington HR

Cherington HR has a range of flexible services to help you manage your staff legally and confidently and to improve your business performance. We have a wide range of experience in dealing with people management situations and can help resolve immediate issues, or help you plan your future business.

Do you need help with grievance or disciplinary matters?

Once you have recruited your staff, it is very important to manage them well – to develop those that are working well and to reward them appropriately. A structured appraisal system will help you do this and can help prevent any inadvertent discrimination against any of your employees. Furthermore, it will help you identify issues that arise as a result of poor performance and allow you to manage the situation appropriately.

If an individual's work is poor or there appear to be absenteeism or disciplinary issues, it is important to deal with them promptly: ignoring them can be seen as acceptance of that standard of performance and that will make it difficult to tackle later.

Cherington HR can help businesses introduce simple, effective appraisal systems and manage any underperformance through disciplinary or capability procedures and help you manage staff absent as a result of illness.

Do you struggle to understand the frequently-changing employment legislation?

* Do you struggle to understand the frequently-changing employment legislation?
* Do you know how to apply it to your business?
* Do you worry about the risks and liabilities associated with getting it wrong or do you ‘bury your head in the sand'?
* Does it take up too much of your time?

As qualified human resources specialists, you can rely on Cherington HR to provide a professional and tailored people management service. We will work with you both to protect you from employment law issues and achieve better results for your business through the people you employ.

We can work with you as required on individual projects or act as your HR Director to focus on people issues for you, leaving you free to do what you do best – run your business.

Changing for good

Our aim at Cherington HR is for you and your business to achieve both your short-term and long-term business objectives. However, you will require your staff to adjust, develop and change, as your business develops. We can support you by devising plans and projects to help your employees adapt to any changes involved. We can work with you to help you achieve such changes and minimise any difficulties along the way.

Change comes in many guises. For example you may need to:

* move location;
* restructure the organisation;
* retrain employees for them to acquire new skills for the business to enter a new market area;
* introduce new IT systems; grow to meet client demands; or retrench to survive a downturn.

All of these involve co-operation from your people and Cherington HR is highly experienced and qualified in the field of change enablement. We will work with you to help enable a smooth transition period and successful outcome.

Do you have up-to-date contracts for your employees?

All businesses regardless of size must provide written contracts of employment for their employees within 8 weeks of them starting work. These written statements outline employees' terms and conditions applicable to their employment, regardless of whether they are engaged on a full-time or part-time basis.

Staff contracts, employment agreements and temporary employment contracts (including occasional and fixed term arrangements) must all cover specific terms including payment rates and arrangements; holiday entitlement; and sick pay arrangements; notice period; and reference to grievance and disciplinary procedures etc.

Does your business have written contracts for all your employees?
Have you kept them up-to-date to match statutory entitlements?

Employment law and minimum entitlements change frequently so contracts can become out of date as a result. Cherington HR can review your existing contracts to see if they meet with the current statutory minimum requirements and put together bespoke documentation to suit the needs of your business.

Do they know the rules?

An employee handbook is a useful tool in ensuring that employees understand what is expected of them. Furthermore, it provides the employer with an excellent way of proving that it has communicated vital rules that it expects its employees to abide by during employment. These will vary by the type of business, but may include policies on:

Appropriate use of IT systems;
Driving on business and use of mobile ‘phones;
The use of alcohol and drugs;
Harassment and Bullying;
Grievance, Disciplinary and Capability procedures;
Arrangements and entitlements to statutory leave – e.g. maternity, paternity and emergency domestic leave.

Handbooks are tailored to suit the nature of the organisation – they can just contain the basics to provide a minimum degree of comfort, or they can be developed in more detail to cover extended material on general terms and conditions; services and amenities; company policies; and employee entitlements.

Right people in the right roles?

Improving the performance of individuals can lead to improved results for the whole business. In addition, spotting and developing capable individuals can ensure continued performance and can transform organisations. So whether you need to know more about an individual's preferred working style as part of your recruitment process or whether you need to help teams work more effectively together, psychometric testing can provide a valuable input. Questionnaires that provide information about a person's behavioural style at work can be very helpful particularly for those roles in which people interactions are important for the success of your business. It will help you make objective decisions in matching the right people to the right roles.

Cherington HR can provide qualified and experienced consultants in psychometric testing, covering both personality profiling and ability testing as appropriate.

Training and Development Support

With any of your business activities that involve change or the development of your staff, you may need to consider some training and development. As part of any project undertaken for you by Cherington HR, we can offer training support where required. For example, if your business decided to introduce a new appraisal scheme, we can train both managers and staff in the use of the new system and how to make it work effectively.

Cherington HR is experienced and qualified to provide training and support in any people management related aspect of business from management development to outplacement support.

Do you talk to your employees enough?

Whatever changes you make within your business, it is important to communicate regularly with your employees. This helps them understand the reasons for your actions. In certain situations there is a legal requirement to consult with workforce representatives and any affected individuals.

Any change management project undertaken by Cherington HR for your business will include appropriate means of employee communication.
