We are very proud to say that our team was invited to provide all physiotherapy assessments, classes and rehabilitation to Braemer Lodge Care Home in Salisbury.

Rehabilitation at Home

Our expert community team have a wealth of experience in the complex rehabilitation of older people - whether it is a general deterioration of balance and mobility, or following an illness, fall, fracture, operation or orthopaedic surgery.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is used by physiotherapists, against a background of sound research and evidence, as a means of reducing pain, inflammation or muscle spasm via the stimulation of the brain, spinal cord and local tissues to produce a natural pain relieving effect.

Conventional acupuncture should not be painful and involves the use of very fine, single use, pre-sterilised disposable needles. A number of needles may be used at each treatment and these are typically left in position for some 20-35 minutes before being gently removed. A quicker technique of trigger point acupuncture may also be recommended to facilitate relaxation in specific muscles.

Research has shown that most people gain pain relief from acupuncture and this is generally due to the release of endorphins into the body during the acupuncture process. Endorphins are the body's natural pain killers. The scientific proof of the release of endorphins allows acupuncture to be integrated with conventional medicine. Clinical trials provide evidence that it has a powerful and sustained effect on muscular/skeletal pain. It is now commonly used in general practice, physiotherapy departments and pain clinics as a complement to conventional medicine.

Cosmetic Acupuncture

Cosmetic acupuncture aims to enhance beauty naturally and from within by stimulating the body's own natural healing, rejuvenation and detoxification processes. It is very safe and has been shown to increase collagen, improve the elasticity of the skin and reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Research has proven that it increases the water and oil content of the skin, enhancing its quality and appearance. Clients are also frequently observed to have brighter eyes and a more radiant overall complexion. Put simply - they look younger.

When administered carefully, this is a very safe, natural and effective treatment. It leaves clients very satisfied with the results. Our cosmetic acupuncture is done by Marie Roberts who is a Chartered Physiotherapist with extensive anatomical knowledge and over 10 years experience in administering acupuncture to the face for conditions such as Facial/Bells Palsy, Trigeminal Neuralgia, headaches, sinus conditions and jaw problems.

Facial cosmetic acupuncture has been clinically proven to work and studies published in the Journal of Acupuncture showed that out of 300 people who had facial acupuncture, 90% demonstrated marked improvements after one session. Although it is important to note that it has a cumulative effect and usually works best with an intense twice-weekly start to treatment over the first few weeks.

Hand Therapy

The ability to use our hands is vital to most daily activities and loss of function through injury or disease can lead to much difficulty in many parts of life. This can affect day-to-day tasks as well as livelihoods, sports, leisure activities and even the way we communicate.

Hand therapy is a specialist area that integrates many different treatment approaches after a thorough assessment of structure, movement and function. This may include; acute or chronic pain management, exercises to increase movement, strength and dexterity, massage and mobilisation techniques, desensitisation after nerve injury or scar tissue formation, sensory stimulation and re-education. New ways of doing things or the use of modified equipment may be recommended. Acupuncture or TENS might also be used to reduce pain.

The clinic welcomes a wide variety of patients with hand conditions. It may be a painful thumb - arthritis or sprain, carpal tunnel syndrome, or a new or old fracture. It may be that post-operative care is required after hand surgery such as dupuytrens fasciectomy, trapezectomy or carpal tunnel release.

Testimonials

"On the recommendation of a friend, I sought support from Marie for a knee injury which was making no progress following unsuccessful interventions by two previous practitioners. Her very careful and thorough initial assessment enabled Marie to appreciate the sensitivity of my knee and she was the only professional I had encountered who was able to adjust her physical treatments together with appropriately judged 'at home' exercises, which did not have a negative impact on my knee. Consequently over a period of six sessions, my knee finally stabilised enabling real sustained healing and progress to be made allowing me to return to my active life once again." Ms G - Non settling knee - twisting injury (4 months prior - and still limping, needing to use an elbow crutch).

Harnham Physiotherapy

"I first saw Marie after being in a lot of pain after breaking my wrist (scaphoid bone) some months previously. She was quick to diagnose Complex Regional Pain Syndrome and immediately set me on a path of treatments to relieve pain, swelling, and discolouration that I was experiencing. This was followed by exercises to improve mobility and strength and together with acupuncture and a lot of encouragement I have made excellent progress. Marie is thorough and kind with an extensive knowledge of hand physiotherapy. She is very approachable and patient - answering questions and setting out home exercises, following up by measurementsand examinations of the hand to review progress. I am so grateful for her professional knowledge and her calm and kind manner." Mrs A - Scaphoid fracture with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome.
