We've passed the entrance to this pub hundreds of times in the last few years and never ventured further. That is until yesterday afternoon whilst out for a drive as most other forms of entertainment have been 'washed-out' this Easter ! The pub itself was built in approximately 1660 and gained notoriety as a smugglers haunt. Interesting, as the pub is only a mile or so from Arundel Cathedral and Castle !We did not eat on this occasion but will return as the menu (pub-grub) is wide, enticing, very popular, large portioned and reasonably priced for the area. When I commented on the size of the portions, the Landlady told me "we don't do small here". This may explain why an older couple were sharing a baguette that resembled a beer barrel from the 1920s !Also noticeable was a large family room accompanied by the usual games just off the main bar and dining area with access to an enclosed garden. Access to the river is via a small footpath down the side of the pub. Additionally, there is a large caravan / camping site adjacent to the pub with a small shop.Tourists, a bit better than the average for this type of pub in the Arundel tourist area. For those belonging to the river boating fraternity, they have storage and mooring facilities immediately adjacent to the pub.
