Testimonials

After my recent stress over writing a speech for whole school assemblies I thought simply writing down what I wanted to say would be easy. I was wrong. I really have no idea what to write about, especially when I have such a wide audience and I’ve only been back at school for a few days. So instead of talking about my life as a Year 13 I’ve decided to reflect on what I’ve already experienced and offer some insight into what it’s like as a Year 12. Things you should know about embracing the halls of Leveson: 1) It’s hard. Like, really, really hard. I’ve already given a speech to the Year 12’s in which I aimed to terrify them using this same message, but I honestly cannot tell them enough not to underestimate the difference between GCSE and A Level. 2) Now the phrase “four to six hours of wider reading” gets thrown around a lot during the first few months (and beyond), but seriously Year 12’s, do it. Even just 1 hour will make a difference, so next time you’re watching the FRIENDS re-runs you’ve seen a million times, just pick up a text book instead, it’s worth it. 3) To add to that, Year 12’s should use their free time wisely. It’s probably not so bad if you get the whole “distance learning” (going chippy during frees) over with during the first few weeks, but after that you should use your free…. Sorry, ‘Non-Contact Time’ to do homework or research. You can even use them to do something to help you with UCAS like volunteer work or sport, anything but sitting in the common room. 4) Organisation is important. It’s not like last year when you get an exercise book and write the date and title. You’re not told what to write down; you have to be responsible for taking notes and keeping those notes for when it comes to revising. And you have complete control over how you do this, so just pick whatever works best for you. If you’d rather have books than folders, the teacher’s not going to tell you no. As long as you have clear notes to revise from, you’re on the right track. 5) That brings us onto revision… start now. Us Year 13’s were given a nice wake-up call in the form of January exams but unfortunately you guys don’t have that. So, start getting your notes organised now and just reading over them in the evenings. You can slowly build up from this and be ready for your exams when they come. 6) Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Year 13’s have already been through what you’re going through right now, right down to the lessons you’re taking. (Lit students, beware…) So if you’re stuck with something and can’t ask a teacher, just ask someone who took the subject last year and most of us will be happy to help. So that’s all I can really tell you about how to achieve in Year 12. I’ve tried my best to avoid cheesy clichés and exclamation points which make it seem like you’re laughing at your own joke, but if I’ve left anything embarrassing in there, please forgive me. I’m only human and writing to such a wide audience is tricky, especially when I have to avoid my usual sarcasm and ‘banter’ (I didn’t mention snapbacks once, you should be proud). I really do hope I’ve offered you all some insight into what Year 12 is like without sounding to ‘cringey’ but I’ve been 100% honest and hey, after rapping in a whole school assembly, there’s not a lot I can’t handle now.
