The Bogliones bought the run-down business and reunited it with the original Petersham House estate, separated for over 45 years. Extensive restoration work was undertaken on the old walled nurseries garden. It re-opened to the public transformed; a magically, whimsical place in the most idyllic of surroundings. Wonderfully stylish displays of plants grown by these serious horticulturists are complimented by garden antiques and original artefacts and a delightfully quirky, organic café/restaurant.

Lunch in a Nursery Greenhouse

Service

Quality

Value

Just back from an idyllic lunch at Petersham Nurseries Restaurant (not to be confused with the café). The restaurant is open for lunch, six days a week, and is housed in a pretty nursery greenhouse. Your rickety chair wobbles on the dirt floor as you eat some very pricy food, surrounded by pot plants and creepers. But the food was very good, and the gorgeous setting seemed to numb the pain of the bill a little. We timed our visit to coincide with a 'chef swap' that was taking place - Petersham's regular head chef, Skye Gyngell, had traded places with top Sydney chef Sean Moran for a month. The menu was small, with only 5 choices per course. We started with the Beetroot Ravioli with Ticklemore Aged Goats Cheese. I really loved this dish - not only did it look fabulous but the flavours worked really really well. Main course was the Milk Fed Veal Chop barbequed with peperonata, sage, runner beans and anchovy butter; and the Hampshire Pork, roasted with fennel, greengages & butternut squash. Both meals were generous in size and flavours. Really happy with our choices.Unfortunately there was nothing on the dessert menu we fancied, so we paid up, and wandered back across Petersham Meadows, dodging cowpats along the way, and stopped off at our favourite chocolate shop for a sweet treat.

A great talent

In the lovely setting of a Garden Centre Sky Gyngell produces outstanding food with influences from Italy , Spain , France the Middle East and Asia - the sort of food often found in the better restaurants of Sydney and Melbourne.Ingredients are often grown on site or sourced from the best producers/suppliers.The restaurant is only open for lunch and if the weather is good its certainly worth the trek to Richmond for a long lazy lunch in the greenhouses or gardens. The wine list is rather limited and does not do the food justice.

Tea & Cake in a Leafy Nursery

Service

One of the loveliest places I have ever had morning tea is at the Petersham Nurseries Tea Room, which is located in Richmond, South West London. The nursery itself is a beautiful place, with all varieties of plants for sale, laid out in ramshackle green houses. At the nursery there is the relaxed Tea House and also a Café/Restaurant that serves up fine dining cuisine. The nursery is a 10-15 minute walk from Richmond Bridge. You can walk along the river for a bit and then cut across Petersham Meadows, dodging the resident cows. You can sit inside or out. Outside you will be sitting on little mismatched chairs and tables amongst the foliage. It is a really pretty setting. We visited on a Sunday morning, arriving right before the 11am opening time. Within 10 minutes almost all of the tables were full.My husband queued up to order our food inside, while I chose a nice little table outside. We both had a coffee which came in individual plungers and was pretty good. To eat, we had a slice of apple cake and a lamington (an Australian cake). Yum - I do love a lamington and hadn't had one for ages!

Delightful way to do tea

What a great place to have some tea and cake with the girls! Hidden away near a meadow close to Richmond is this delightful garden centre where you can buy plants(as expected)plus a heap of other niceties including natural candles, lavender bunches and there's even a selection of wellies! The cafe itself, is in one of the greenhouses. Its self-service and you get your own wooden tray and teapot with tea strainer! Lovely fresh cakes are on sale eg fig cake and brownies which went down a treat. Will definitely visit again.

Beautiful, whimsical and delicious. A thouroughly enjoyable morning perusing options for my borders and soaking up the atmosphere followed by lazy afternoon lunching in the cafe. Service was just right and food was out of this world. I can't wait to bring my relatives from overseas.
