About

About Us

The Surrey Hills Board consists of Core (funding) and Advisory (non-funding) members consisting of representatives from local authorities, public bodies and agencies, landowners, land managers and farmers, and other special interest groups.

The Board was established in 2008 with the main purpose of; helping to conserve and enhance the landscape, promote public understanding and enjoyment and to strengthen the rural economy of the Surrey Hills area.

The Surrey Hills AONB unit undertakes work on behalf of the Board and prepares and implements the Management Plan, which formulates policy for the management of the area.

Who We Are

Sean Harrison has been employed as the Surrey Hills Woodland Advisor. Sean will work with landowners, farmers and contractors to bring neglected woods across Surrey back into management for timber, wood fuel, conservation and biodiversity. Download our leaflet ‘Getting the best from your woodlands' to find out more about Sean's work. Many small woodlands in Surrey are currently under-managed, which limits the light reaching plants and flowers on the forest floor affecting their growth and the animals which rely on them for habitats and food. Sean's role will help to protect the woods and forests that make the Surrey Hills so special – by managing the woodlands their value in ecological terms as well as economically can increase.

As well as identifying pockets of privately owned, neglected coppices and mapping ancient woodland, Sean will assist landowners with applications for grants to fund the work needed to provide wildlife habitats, increase biodiversity and harvest timber.

The role has been joint-funded by the Forestry Commission, The Woodland Trust, The Sylva Foundation and The Surrey Hills Board.

To contact Sean Harrison, Woodland Adviser you can email sean.harrison@surreycc.gov.uk or telephone 01372 220650 or 07896 463868

Woodland

The Surrey Hills is one of the most wooded AONBs, with almost 40% woodland cover, and woodland is perhaps now the defining feature of the Surrey Hills landscape. The woodland is diverse, including shaws, old coppice, wooded ghylls, parkland trees, small carrs and conifer plantations. Ancient semi-natural woodland has particular significance in terms of historic and nature conservation importance with 4564 hectares of Ancient Woodland, covering nearly 12% of the AONB. This is a fragment of what was once in the area but is still a significant amount of species-rich woodland.

The yew and box woodlands of the North Downs are of international importance. The Surrey Hills woodlands have been managed for centuries and hide a wealth of archaeological features. Today they are valued for nature conservation, timber production or recreational pursuits such as shooting, cycling or walking.
