If I could leave a minus then I would. Visited today to have lunch with 2 other people. I have never had such an absolutely disgusting meal in my life. How a flat bread can be totally ruined is beyond belief. Half a flat bread was covered in lettuce leaves, 2 whole cherry tomatoes dumped on top, 2 olives and with literally dollops of what looked like rose marie sauce - goodness knows what it was as it was tasteless. Chips were not skinny fries with skins on as advertised , rather very very cheap chunky oven chips which tasted nasty. Another guest has steak pie. Needless to say their meal was equally appalling - 1 piece of carrot, 1 tiny bit of 'greens' - couldn't even say what this was, mashed potato which looked as though it had been trodden on numerous times and then heated up and beef, questionable as there was hardly anything and what there was, was slimy complete with raw pastry. Even the coffee had a very strange taste. I didn't complain as I didn't want to upset the people I was with. More fool me I should have complained because we left we and spoke about the meals, we had all thinking exactly the same - what absolute crap. What has happened to Chef and Brewer? Food use to be so good. Their food is atrocious. I swore sometime ago I would never go again having experienced similar at another of their pubs. This time there is no way that I will ever go again. I would rather throw my money down the toilet. Wake up Chef and Brewer you are loosing customers in droves! I am even considering contacting environmental health because if the food was that bad I can't imagine what the kitchens must be like! Stop trying to achieve mediocrity because you aren't even coming close to it. Hasn't anyone at Head Office heard of the word 'quality' - have you ever eaten any of your own food. I bet you haven't. I really am livid!!

Birthday meal out

Service

I booked a table for 9 on Sunday 9th June for a birthday meal. When seated it took an age to be asked for our order, We then ordered our various meals. When they arrived, 3 of them were the wrong ones. Order for them was retaken, and when served, one was still not right. when at last it was right, most of us had eaten our meals, as if we had waited, they would all have been cold. Afterwards, puddings were ordered again the order was not right one didn't arrive and had to be re-ordered. A Birthday cake was brought in by one of our party, we asked for plates to serve it on, and were told there were none and gave us serviettes. This was not the best of celebrations at all, George Sumner

We have three local Chef and Brewers in Dorking, Leatherhead and Ripley all of which are receiving awful reviews. We have personal experience of all three and been on the receiving end of poor food, slow service and rude staff.. Why don't the senior management sort out these and others in the group. If they don't people will stop using them for good!!

Bakers Arms Waltham Abbey

Service

Quality

Value

Stayed at the Premier Inn in Waltham Abbey and the Baker's Arms was the obvious choice for breakfast. What was clearly advertised as back bacon rashers turned out to be streaky bacon which was so overcooked it almost shot off the plate when I tried to cut it. The explanation was the delivery had not come. This happened for 3 days so obviously your delivery service is very poor. In the evening the wrong meal came up and half the menu was not available. It was a very poor show and you should be ashamed to allow this sort of service to happen. The staff were apologetic and explained that whilst there was a Tesco down the road, they could not buy from them because of contamination or allergy problems. You really need to get this sort this out.

We had a really good steak but on the plate was half a coz lettuce which did not go with the meal at all. Completely unnecessary. I think it was just to fill up the space on the plate. Otherwise the meal was really nice.

I went to the Boat House about a month ago, my self and a friend both ordered Gluten Free Fish and Chips they arrived with the rest of our Parties meals but when we cut into the fish it was totally uncooked and the batter was still runny under the outer shell they recooked us second pieces of Fish and again both were raw, However we were out for a Birthday with the same group of friends and the Birthday Girl had chosen the Boat House all went well with the main and then I ordered the sundae with Brownie and caramel from the Gluten Free menu, reminding the waiter that I am Gluten Free, My friend decided 5 minutes later to order the same also Gluten Free desert as mine looked so nice as the waiter placed it down saying this is the non Gluten one. I had already started mine while my friend waited but when hers came she only had ice cream and Caramel sauce, she asked why mine was different , I had shortbread and Brownie another waiter came over and explained this was the Gluten Free version! I had eaten half of mine, I asked for the manager who came along after 5 minutes saying to him I was very upset as I have coeliac and have now eaten Gluten,He said orders can be muddled on the counter, he asked if I needed medical assistance, I said no but this would be enough to make me sick for a couple of days, he asked if I would like another desert, I said definitely not. I ended up missing the rest of the Birthday celebrations as within the hour had stomach pains a head ache and felt sick, I have since spent the week feeling exhausted as this is what my illness does to me.If any body celebrates a Birthday again I will stay at home. Maybe GF flags or different dishes and extra staff training is needed.

Dreadful lunch. The place was virtually empty...then found out why. The table was sticky and looked grubby with faded paint. . I ordered Calves Liver with Potato mash and bacon. The only thing edible was the one slice of bacon. The mash was lumpy with no taste at all. The liver could have been used for shoe leather.! I was told that the liver could only be cooked to a certain temperature.....not lightly cooked and slightly pink, which would ensure it was soft, tasty and edible. If liver cannot be cooked as it should, then it should be removed from your menu. My lunch consisted of 2 cups of coffee! Admittedly the staff did the correct thing and did not charge for my meal, just the coffees. The only thing I enjoyed at lunch was the company and conversation of my friends. Yvonne Bennett

i booked colleagues in at the Chef and Brewer Guisborough -as I have often done... and we met with them for a meal on the evening. Chose from the Special Offer Menu - only two out of three starters - and the brewers chicken was disappointing to say the least but if you call that salad quality pub food - you deserve to close your doors!! dried up, sad, lacking freshness and colour - I was too embarrassed to say to our guests or even if front of them - but did mention it to staff - it was lacking in most ways !!! perhaps we should have said we wont pay and things might go back to a better standard!!!

I have just telephoned one of your venues to be told that I can longer call in and book a table for Christmas lunch for 9 people it has to be done on the net. I find this ridiculous as I only live a stones throw away from the pub. Also believe it or not not everyone is on the web.I can understand that people can book via the web but surely it must also be OK to walk in and book a table. I am afraid you will lose out on a lot of customers.CAN YOU PLEASE E MAIL ME BACK AND EXPLAIN THIS RIDICULOUS IDEA As I could not find your e mail address I have contacted you this way and so as to this will be send I have just put a dot in the middle.!!!!!!!

I just want to congratulate the staff at this Chef and Brewer restaurant for a great meal last Thursday evening. (17-10-2013) We have often been to this pub over many years and sometimes it has been just mediocre or even bad, but last Thursday was great. There were not many staff on duty but we were never kept waiting and all staff were very helpful and pleasant. Thank you for making our evening so good.

worse meal

Service

Quality

Last night we had the worse meal ever at a Chief and Brewer Pub. We arrived to find they had changed the menu. The Gluten Free list was not available. The Vegetarian choices were poor and expensive. The steak was uneatable, tough and chewy. All I could eat was the chips. And the menu was a floppy piece of cheap paper which was difficult to find your way around, and in the twilight difficult to read.

We went for an early fathers day meal. The Bridge at Waterbeach Cambridge. We have been before and though expensive have had good food. However the nutty chefs have got in and ruined it. Roasted new potatoes turned out to be stale leftovers fried and still with the skins on. Horrible taste to chewy to eat and disgusting. The slow roast rib of beef was the stew pot end of the rib bone usually kept only for stews/casseroles with a lump of bone not attached to the meat therefore pointless, except to try to hint at better quality than was served. Meat was stringy and totally unacceptable. Complained and had the cost removed from the bill but the outing was spoiled. Get real before your reputation goes right down the pan. If the item contains these so called roast avoid it like the plague.

The Old Bell Harpenden

Service

Booked a table at this venue for a party of 10 (birthday occasion); chose this chain at short notice as my usual dining places were fully booked; and as the menu appeared to be varied and moderately priced thought all would be fine. Under normal circumstances I wouldn't entertain such brands as I have never had a decent meal at anything similar (Beefeaters, Harvesters, etc.), however I had limited choice having just returned from holiday. What a mistake!.. The table was booked for 10 people and although ready, the table itself was far from clean and had a sticky residue across the length of it; couple this with the fact the cutlery (contained in large pots on the table), were a mismatch of various types which were also grubby and looking far from clean, I had the impression all was not going to be well. How I wish at that point we had left before eating. Having arrived at 6.30pm and ordered a round of drinks, 30% of which could not be provided due to problems with stock, we ordered our starters and mains. Forty five minutes (45) later, the starters arrived, adequate but nothing special; still things looked a bit more promising. Ordered another round of drinks, now even less choice than the first time around!... One hour and a half hours later, following the removal of the starter plates, the main meal finally arrived. To be honest I thought about complaining at this point, but the "damage" had already been done so what was the point?!... In the meantime I noticed that 3 other tables had walked before their meals had arrived and had there not been ten of us (and a 3 year old) I guess we would have done the same; and this was someone's birthday. My meal was basically awful; gloopy mashed potato, with beef rib and some green beans covered in a tepid warm gravy; I'm being honest when I say I've seen more appetising dog food. My sons meal was stone cold and obviously returned; he received a replacement 10 minutes after we had picked out way through the offering that had been provided to us. At this point the supposed manager came across to apologise profusely for the level of service we had received, explain they had had staffing problems. I informed them politely that I would not be paying for the meal as it had been a disaster from start to finish; they promptly agreed and also offered free deserts on the house. About 50% took up this offer, the rest of the party being totally dismayed by now. Following this the "real" manager (Lisa) had been called in and asked to have a word with me in private. She, again apologised for the poor service and quality of food, pointing out that she was so embarrassed by what had happened this particular evening. I accepted the apology and she followed it by saying that I was to book again in a couple of weeks and the same party would be catered for on the house; she wanted to "prove" that they could deliver a good service and a good meal. She said that as it was a birthday, she ensure personally that all everything would be perfect and that a cake etc. would be supplied as an apology for ruining our evening. Note that we had been seated at 6.30pm and was eventually finished at 10:45pm. I accepted her offer and have rebooked for September 2nd 2012. A report will follow; and trust me; it won't be good as it has already taken place; hence the reason for this first report actually being published; my intention being to give the Old Bell a chance to rectify itself.

Re Chef and Brewer Pub The Bell Harpenden 13.8.12 very unlucky date! Absolute disgrace to call this place a restaurant. Sat and waited 40 minutes and drank a bottle of wine and a pint of beer whilst waiting for a salad and a burger. Meanwhile two tables complained about the quality of their food and sent it back. No manager in sight and the poor waiting staff having to deal with the complaints. Why keep the restaurant functioning when obviously there was no management and very poor kitchen staff. What a disgrace of a place calling itself a restaurant.Plus advertising for Christmas. I can 't imagine going to this place calling itself a resta urant for Christmas. Get your act together. We certainly won't be coming back

ivisited the above today with two grandchildren. There was a childrens meny but no childrens knives forks and spoons.it would have been better to offer the children a spoon to help them eat their supper.Although the staff are pleasant I had to ask again for my coffee which I ordered with the childrens pudding (this came). I think a general training could help.I had in fact booked the tabkle and said that two children would be coming with me.
