What is mediation

In many cases the first casualty of a disagreement is the lack of any dialogue. People will argue or just stop talking altogether instead of trying to reason with each other. When this happens it becomes impossible for people to resolve their differences amicably. Mediation fills that communication gap to allow the disputants to bring an end to the conflict.

How does mediation work

Mediation is where an impartial third party, the mediator, helps two or more people in dispute to attempt to reach an agreement. Any agreement comes from those in dispute, not from the mediator. The mediator is not there to judge, to say one person is right and the other wrong, or to tell those involved in the mediation what they should do. The mediator is in charge of the process of seeking to resolve the problem but not the outcome.

Why mediation

Unresolved conflict costs a lot more than just money. Disputes that are not resolved early can lead to unrest and division within the workplace sewing the seeds for future problems. It is well known that stress and associated medical conditions can be attributed to an unhappy work environment, not just for those in dispute but for those around them too.



Employment tribunals are costly and time consuming. Companies and organisations risk damaging their reputations if they find themselves having to attend too many. It makes sense that every effort is made to prevent workplace disputes reaching that stage.
