Beware Barnsley Van Hire

These guys thought they had seen me coming - WORNG! I hired a van to move house - a full day hire, unlimited mielage for £55. A reasonable price, a decent enough van (although one of the electric mirrors wasn't working and the lock for the rear door was a bit mashed). I moved my stuff and returned the van to be faced with a performance which was somewhat short of Oscar winning and not very convincing. The van had dirty streaks on the nearside, which could be removed with a dry hand. Three staff made such a drama about how much damage was on the van, saying I must have hit or scraped against something! The thing is, I'm one of those people who would own up even if I only thought something could have been my fault - and I KNOW that the van had been in no way damaged while in my care. As I say, it had some dirty streaks on it. Well, they started claiming that I had dented it (there were NO dents to be seen!!!!) - next thing I was told there was a couple of hundrend pounds worth of damage which I would have to pay for. They claimed to be able to proove this using CCTV. I had a taxi waiting, so told them I'd drive back once I'd collected my car, and they could show me proof of damage on the afor mentioned CCTV footage. As promised, I returned to find the van gone (suspicious) and no evidence of damage to be seen. Rather than looking at CCTV, I was told that, as proof, they could ring the last person who hired the van. I clearly stated that I had caused no damage and was not prepared to pay without concrete proof to the contrary. Ringing the previous customer was certainly not proof of anything. One of the staff members took me outside and 'explained' to me that he only worked for the company and wanted to give me 'independent' advice in the form of "the company has a £250 excess on insurance, so if it was him, he'd offer to pay something, say £80". So we'd gone from a couple of hundred pounds worth of damage (which doesn't exist) to £80 to stay out of court. I said I'd take court. The guy then went o to ask if I'd ever been to court, as it wouldn't be nice. I think at this point he expected me to crumble and out of fear, pay £80 to spare me an ordeal. I told them very clearly that I would not be paying a penny unless evidence could be brough in court. I returned to the company after collecting my car because I have NOTHING to hide. I am not an easily scared little woman who can fall for an easy con, and I will not be intimidated. Please stay clear of these sharks. Go for a reputable company (a well known national company not so far away will match the price given by these guys). If Barnsley Van Hire were a decent company they would have performed a proper, documented 360 degree inspection pre-hire (which they didn't) and woudl not be trying to con decent members of the public out of more money.
