Rock City is one of Nottingham's premier live venues, especially for rock based bands. They also throw party club nights on a weekend. I have seen a few gigs here, and also been to the club nights too. The gig nights obviously depend on who you are going to see, but to watch a band the venue is great. It has quite a unique, underground feel to it with the stairs situated at the back. The sound isn't fantastic but it is nice and loud, if a bit mushy. The club nights are ok, there are a few rooms to choose from so that's good but the music didn't stand out to much in any of the rooms. The biggest annoyance of this place is the bar staff. They must be told to ID everyone. I'm in my twenties and they always Id me and my friends who are of a similar age. Even when buying a soft drink. This seems bizare.Overall as a gig night its an interesting experience, and is a nice venue, as a club night it does come recommended provided you are not too fussy about your music!

Well...As a venue, it's preety good. In the main hall the stage runs along the wide/long wall so it's easyish to get to the front if you want to. It is generally smaller/more intimate than other venues on the circuit for bands of the size, and prices are reasonable. All in all, well worth it. But, as a gig venue...ack ack ack! It's far too big & cavernous, no atmosphere, far too much use of the smoke machine and bloody freezing! I'm never that impressed with the music choice or the drinks offers (OK on some bottles of beer though). It's worth giving it try if you're just starting out in Nottingham, but personally I head straight for Cookie Club every time!

Saturday nights at Rock City

If you like your Rock then you're in the right place. A good rock club should meet certain criteria - dingy (check), sticky floor (check, although they keep trying to clean it), grimy loos (check), ageing djs (check), cheap booze (check), way too much dry ice (check), excellent music (check). Rock clubs are supposed to be this way and we'd be dissappointed if they weren't! On Saturday nights the Rig blasts out the classics at Reloaded, while upstairs they play more modern stuff in Distortion. My perception of the big upstairs room is that it is full of young skater types in baggy jeans, but maybe that's just because I tend to stay in the Rig where Air Guitar rules on the dancefloor. There's a real mix of people in this room - ageing rockers, students and everyone in between. There's a metal room too (Nailed). I've not ventured in so can't really comment. Easily the best Rock venue in the vicinity.

on a night out with friends which started off brilliantly until we got to rock city. a barmaid took money off my friend only gave him one drink out of the 2 he'd ordered and when pressed about it remarked bluntly that she'd "lied". we told management but they merely set security around us to intimidate, and refused to even question the barmaid. shame, cos it used to be good.

Drunken fun

Expect to get the most out of this venue with a few beers inside you! Rock City is special because it is so big, grungey and unpretentious. For these reasons it is a refreshing change of scenery from other Nottingham clubs. Thursdays are student nights and the club is at its fullest on this day of the week. The resident Thursday night DJ's music selection is not up to scratch and he seems to make concessions to the younger emo types who enjoy more commerical strains of rock and alternative music. Rock City works best as a live music venue as it is spacious, there are multiple bar areas for convenient access, and it has elevated areas for better views of the stage.

Top notch venue

This place has some amazing live bands on at rather cheap prices. The place where they play is roomy with double bars so there's never too much of a queue. Drinks are reasonably priced and bar staff are friendly.Downstairs there are separate rooms they open up for different music genres on club nights (very cheap with student card).Overall brilliant place to see up and coming bands.

I have been to several gigs here now and have really enjoyed each of them. The venue is quite big but not so big that you are far away from the band. There are 2 bars in the main area so queues to get drinks aren't too bad, although you don't get served particularly cold cans of lager. The best place to stand is at eye level with the stage so you get the best of the sound and can see the band clearly. Have stood up on the balcony before and although it was good, the atmosphere just wasn't there. I definately enjoy coming to this venue and it usually has a nightclub event on afterwards too which is always good for students!

Great cosy venue, not too big not too small, seen 5 gigs there already. Tickets are reasonable priced as are of the drinks. Easy to get to if you are on the bus, and there is a car park a few seconds walk away. Plenty of act to see from big sellers, to the new talent. The sound system is fantastic. Great for all ages, my only niggle is the sticky floor. Last time I was there it took a few minutes to get served, however it could have been of one off problem. My next gig the Ting Tings in a few weeks. Can't wait!

Amazing bands

This venue is pretty big and is one of the UK's major venues. A lot of world class bands visit this venue on their tours and so it is good to check who is playing every now and again. The sound is good in both the main hall and basement. It is always good that if you ask nicely the bar staff will give you free cups of ice cold water. This is great especially when it is packed full of people and its very hot.The stereotypical security guys are very intimidating and are very unfriendly although i suppose that isn't their job. The place is not spotless but it doesn't matter in the dark anyway.Overall this is a great place if you are into bands or club nights with alternative music.
