Lost its way big time I'm afraid
Wow - this usual favourite has really lost its way since the successful previous landlord left 6 months ago to go back to his Liverpudlian roots.Most telling is that virtually all of the good bar staff have left and although the pub will always attract a large crowd of tourists on a weekly basis they really have been off colour with the regulars that were the bread and butter of this huge rambling establishment with its entrance down a long passage off Stonegate.I'll review this again soon in the hope that the Brewery / Pub Chain etc have seen sense and got someone to run it who has more of a clue what people really want from this place.To quote a motoring analogy - a top vintage car, lousy driver...!

local, yocal and with a view
Ye olde Starre Inn, is off of York's main tourist trap that is Stonegate (thats the one that leads up to the Minster). The prefered hang out of 'old men', locals and some students, this public house is cosy (despite being laid out across three main rooms) and retain 'character'. The drink selection is typically (for York) ale led, but there are 'pretty' views out of the bar window. Or if you prefer not to strain your neck outside seating means that you can look skywards to gaze upon the Minster. Do not expect 'drinks offers', cocktails or mad hen and stag night dancing. Thankfully this place is more civilised. The food is more about portion size than quality, but it is the usual pub grub fare that is served hot and quickly. You won't be overwhlemed by your visit, but it makes a nice contrast to the Evil Eye cocktail 'lounge' next door. Stay for the view, leave for the cocktails next door.
