From the RSPCA website Puppy search Make sure you see a puppy with its mother when you buy from a breeder or commercial premises - this will give you a good idea of background, health, eventual size and temperament. It should stay with its mother for at least eight weeks. Never buy a puppy from someone at a car boot sale, tabletop sale or in a car park, and avoid buying puppies from pet shops - you may be supporting the illegal and cruel practice of puppy farming. from the Dogs Trust factsheet DogsTrust recommends that you: Avoid buying from petshop/other retail outlet or through newspaper advertisement offering a wide range of breeds. It is possible that these puppies may have come from puppy farms: they may have been bred insicrinminately, putting profit before the dog's welfare from the Kennel Club website Where NOT to buy a puppy or a dog 16-May-06 Puppy farms, dealers and pet shops Puppy farms are like factory farms where dogs are bred purely for profit. The dogs are normally bred too often, many are unhealthy, and often live in unbearably poor conditions. The puppies are generally removed from their mothers far too early and sent by rail or van to ‘dealers' or pet shops in the big cities to satisfy the public's demands. Many are severely traumatised by the transition, and some do not make it alive. Do not buy a puppy or a dog from these sources, as they will have had the worst possible start in life, and are far more likely to have health and temperament problems. Do not buy a puppy or a dog from a pet shop as it is likely to have originated from a puppy farm. Good breeders would never sell their puppies via a pet shop, despite what you may be told.
