Cycling

Remember: Not all breeds are built for prolonged speed so make sure you consider physical factors and seek advice from your vet.

Running

Running is a great way to keep fit and taking the dog with you keeps you motivated, well it's always good to have an enthusiastic running buddy! You can start off by combining short bursts of running with walking and building up gradually. You'll increase your fitness in no time.

After your first few sessions, you might want to start to think about what kit you require for yourself and your dog. If you're lucky enough to be able to run across country, then a basic harness with a longer running lead that either attaches to a running belt or loops around your waist should do the trick and won't break the bank. When running along roads, there are safety issues to consider for example, visibility and being able to keep control. In this case, a shorter, hand held lead will be required.

Your dog will need good basic lead skills to start with and be over 12 months of age to make sure his bones are strong enough. Just like humans though, some dogs just aren't built for speed so make sure you consider physical factors and seek advice from your vet.

Set yourself a goal, whether it's to be able to run non-stop for 30 minutes, or run your first 5K race, you'll feel a great sense of achievement and be encouraged to continue. Happy training!
