We ate at Raj Rani in Rainham last night after enjoying food from the similarly named takeaway in Wigmore. I was looking forward to eating in the restaurant as we have enjoyed many curries from what we assumed was their other branch. Sadly, I am not exaggerating when I say this is the worst Indian food I have ever eaten. We ordered two different dishes from the menu and it was clear that the food served up less than 5 minutes after ordering (a worrying sign) were not those descibed on the menu. My “Chicken Tikka Rezzala" consisted only of chicken tikka, mushrooms and a thin mild curry sauce with the consistency of soup. There was no onion, pepper or green chili as listed on the menu. They did however remember the egg! The other curry ordered in our group was garlic chicken, this similarly was a thin mild curry sauce this time with garlic and chicken tikka pieces and you guessed it... nothing else. I'm not sure if this was an off night, perhaps the chef was called away at the last minute due to some emergency?! But the food was an absolute joke. When I complained the waiter asked if we had eaten there before, having said no he explained that their food was quite bland! I don't mind if the food isn't overly spicey but it does have to have some flavour, include more than base ingredients and attempt to be what is described on the menu. Another negative, though not the fault of the owners were the other overly loud and obnoxious customers who felt the need to swear loudly at the waiters. Perhaps our food was the product of this adverse working environment?! Please remember not all your customers are idiots! Pluses, drinks and breads were fine and the price fairly reasonable if you are happy with the food. If you like Indian food, based on our visit last night then this restaurant is one to be avoided.

10th Feb 2009Having used the Raj Rani a few more times for take-aways and tonight for a meal in the restaurant I thought that I should revisit my review as a good restaurant has got even better. We went quite early and were warmly greeted. The menu has all the 'favourites' that you would expect and also some good specials. The service was faultless throughout and the food excellent and I was very pleasantly surprise by the bill...excellent value!Despite being a cold Tuesday night as we sat there I noted the restaurant steadily filling up....all seemed to be well known regulars, which I think says so much! ********************I have used the Raj Rani Restaurant in Rainham a few times and thought that I would try there take-away shop in Wigmore one evening. It has a good location opposite a pub and next door to a (great) fish and chip shop....something for everyone! The menu is very comprehensive with a few intersting specials and set meals. Very reasonably priced, fast turn around and better than their restaurant!
