lovediamonds.co.uk Jewellery has been fully established for over 7 decades having been passed down two generations working throughout Southend-on-sea Essex and across the Uk. The lovediamonds team have a collective pool of knowledge spanning over 70 years specialising in the finest quality diamond jewellery available today. The choice of diamonds are endless. As a natural product diamonds vary widely in terms of colour and clarity and they are crafted by highly skilled diamond cutters into a variety of shapes. Every diamond needs to be set into a piece of jewellery to bring out its full beauty and here your personal taste and lifestyle will of course be the deciding factor. When you are looking at diamonds you will find a wide range of prices available, something to suit every budget. The factors which influence the price are the quality of the diamond ie. its colour and clarity, its size and of course the precious metal piece of jewellery which it is set into, usually yellow or white gold, or platinum.

You can choose a diamond which is exactly right for you. Diamond weight is stated in carats, a measurement derived from the more romantic, (but less accurate) original scale of comparison using the seed of the carob tree. Precision balances are now used and a carat has been standardised as equivilent to one fifth of a gram. Diamonds over one carat are particularly rare. Less than 5% of gem quality diamonds acheive this weight once they are cut and polished, making them more desirable and more expensive. An international colour grading scale is used in the jewellery trade, defining every nuance in shade. An unskilled eye would struggle to tell the difference between two adjacent grades but a qualified and experienced gemmologist, assisted by pure white light and master 'comparison' stones can accurately classify diamonds according to the colour grading scale shown below.
As with size and cut there is no such thing as the 'correct' colour - it is just one of the factors which makes your diamond unique.

A rough diamond looks like a dull pebble, which takes hours of expert skill to reveal its beauty by cutting and polishing it to perfection. The precision of the cut determines the brilliance and fire of your diamond. Facets must be cut so that they maximise the total amount of reflected and refracted light, giving the diamond a stunning sparkle that is so attractive. This is a skillful art learned over centuries and passed down over generations.
Round brilliant is the most popular polished shape, but there are a wide variety of cuts available including Oval, Marquise, Pear, and Emerald. All diamonds contain tiny imperfections, called inclusions, which are nature's fingerprint, making every diamond unique. Many inclusions are invisible to the naked eye and can only be assessed by a gemmologist using magnification.
As with colour, clarity affects value and a scale has been established by which diamonds can be graded. This divides into sectors, ranging from the extremely rare flawless stones through to those which have inclusions which can just be seen by the naked eye, as long as you know what your looking for.
