What s your metaphor...

Whilst working with a client recently I was struck by his strong use of metaphor throughout our coaching sessions. They were always used with a degree of humour, which initially led me to overlook their importance. It was following a later session when my client had become stuck that I reflected on his words - the metaphors came flooding back to me!My client's use of metaphor was always very strong, depicting perceived impending conflict. During our next session I sought my client's permission to explore his use of language in some detail. It soon became apparent that his use of metaphor mirrored how he viewed his professional life in particular situsations. It exposed a general lack of confidence, low self-esteem and the need for recognition. During a crucial part of the coaching session a long silence ensued, which was shortly accompanied by a look of recognition as the pennies slowly dropped: my client was struck with the sudden realization of his take on life. That old adage became a truth for him - "how you see the world is generally what you get."With this breakthrough we were able to work together to find more empowering and useful metaphors for him to live by. My client is now working to embrace a more positive reality and is making excellent headway. As a coach, I learned a very important lesson from this experience: my client presented with concerns about a very specific situation and it was only by exploring his use of metaphor that we were able to unlock the hidden agenda and start to move him on. The most important aspect for me as a coach was the recognition that language and behaviour are inextricably linked, each predicting the other in a repetitious cycle. Language is therefore a key factor in predicting behavior. Language can both confine you within a self-imposed prison, ot it can be your liberator. All you have to do is choose!Listen to your own use of language and hear what it is saying about you, how you view the world and your existence within it. Find your own empowering metaphors to live by and kick-start your future now!

Unfulfilling Desire Friday Sep 19 2008

Unfulfilling Desire Friday, Sep 19, 2008We all have dreams about what we want or desire in life and that is normal. Desire will always exist, it is part of the human condition. We are surrounded and constantly bombarded by a vast media machine offering instant gratification through the acquisition of material posessions; trinkets that seemingly guarantee to endow endless happiness. The attainment of our desires invariably does not produce the expected outcome. The novelty of the new car soon wears off. The thrill of our new acquisition fades, leading us to seek yet more stimulation. For most of us, this is normal. But if desire is using up too much of our energy, causing stress and loss of sleep - it is clearly unhealthy. It may be time to analyse the true nature of the desire and assess the effort required to maintain it.A good place to start is to have awareness of the present moment - most of us either live in the past, which is gone forever, or attempt to inhabit the future, which is impossible, because it has not yet arrived. Take stock of the present; see where you are now! Only then can you decide where you want to go and what you need to do to achieve it. When you truly know what you want, then is the time to act. By acting in this way, you will control your desire rather than it controlling you.You could of course seek the assistance of a life coach!Mark Roberts
