Family mediation for couples who are separating and need cost effective help and advice. Friendly and impartial service.
This is a confidential service which helps couples in Brighton and Hove deal with all issues around divorce and separation. These include making contact arrangements for the children, assisting with all issues relating to finances and drafting up agreements.
We cover Brighton, Hove and the surrounding area.
Home visits are also available.
Sliding scale rates are available for those on low incomes.
Our impartial mediators also volunteer for BHIMS, a local mediation charity specialising in Community and Workplace Mediation. Please contact us if you feel that you might need either of these services.
In March 2014 a new amendment to the Children and Families Bill was introduced, turning the current expectation to attend mediation into a requirement to attend.
Under the new Child Arrangements Programme (CAP) families are encouraged to use dispute resolution services, including family mediation, as alternatives to court proceedings. Applicants are now required to attend a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting prior to making an application to the court for a child arrangements order unless an exemption applies. (Exceptions to the general rules are set out in full in the Family Procedure Rules 2010)
The mediation involves an independent, impartial mediator helping individuals reach a solution that is acceptable. The mediator talks to all parties separately and then together. Mediators do not make judgements or determine outcomes – they ask questions that help to uncover underlying problems, assist the parties to understand (each others) issues and help them to clarify the options for resolving their differences or dispute. The overriding aim of mediation is to restore and maintain relationships wherever possible. This means understanding what has happened and why but with a clear focus on working together to go forward; it is not about determining who was right or wrong in the past.
Mediation is an effective form of dispute resolution, no matter what the disagreement is over.
