The Rex Cinema, Wareham

The Rex Cinema is an independently run cinema which screens a wide variety of films, both old and new. It is open 7 days a week, 50 days of the year with shows at 7.10pm daily except Tuesdays when shows are 6pm. Built circa 1880 it used to be the Odd Fellows Hall and became the Empire Cinema before becoming the Rex, in the 1940s. Seating is for 130 and you can take a glass of wine up to the auditorium during the film from the bar. The Purbeck Film Festival is a charity run festival running for over 17 years, mostly by volunteers, and they screen around 80 films in over 30 venues across the Purbeck region, including Poole and Bournemouth. The main festival takes place during the last two weeks of October every year.

The Purbeck Film Festival has been running for over 17 years and is a not for profit registered charity event, which takes place in the Purbeck region of Dorset each October for two weeks. We screen over 80 films in around 30 venues including pubs, tourist venues, arts centres, castles, cinemas and in some cases homes!

The Rex Cinema is a listed building, built circa 1880 and used to the the Odd Fellowes Hall. It has been a cinema since the 1920s, formerly the Empire, and continues to open 7 days a week as a community, not for profit cinema. We are only closed Christmas Day, New Year's Day and Easter Sunday. The Trust purchased the cinema in 2009 and also runs the Purbeck Film Festival which has been going for over 17 years. This takes place the last two weeks every October and shows 80+ films in 30+ venues
