Many visitors fall in love with the island and look for possibilities of owning a house on Naxos.
Naxos has some excellent architects, engineers and skilled craftsmen.
The villas are built to very high standards of quality and design.
Due to the abundance of marble on the island often the villas will have marble floors throughout unless floor tiles are preferred by the clients.
Property maintenance and gardening services are provided by Northern European and Greek people who live permanently on the island.
Further real estate information is on realestate.html
Naxos has some of the finest beaches in the Mediterranean.
The Southwest coast has a succession of sandy beaches which are sheltered from the prevailing North wind and have crystal clear water.
In addition the beaches of St. George and Orkos have ideal surfing conditions.
There are I.K.O. wind-and kite surf schools on the the island which provide lessons and equipment hire.
Naxos is a beautiful island for walking in the spring and autumn.
At that time there hardly any tourists on the island and the beaches are virtually empty. Until the end of May the island is full of a vast variety of wild flowers and the sea is often warm enough till well into the autumn.
The interior of Naxos is virtually unchanged by tourism.
Due to a generous supply of water the island's interior has fertile valleys with ancient olive and citrus groves.
Mountain terraces are still intensively cultivated and produce a rich variety of fruit, nuts and vegetables.
The island has many mountain villages, each with their own character.
Ancient footpaths and mule tracks lead past olive groves and orchards, offering a complete sense of peace and solitude.
Naxos has more than 50 villages and attempting to provide even the most minimal information will still result in an extensive number of pages. This section should only be used as an introduction, and cannot ever hope to be comprehensive. Once begun, the discovery of the island will never be completed.
Although it is possible to drive around most of Naxos along relatively recent asphalt roads in a day or two, the island will only will begin to reveal itself slowly once you leave the car behind.
The island has a long cultural history, and sometimes different layers of time become visible simultaneously. Churches may contain stones of a previous temple, Venetian fortifications may be found near a church still containing frescoes from the Byzantine period.
Despite the development of tourism in more recent years the villages of the interior still retain their traditional and individual character.
After a day of exploration it can be rewarding to have an evening meal in one of the village tavernas.
The wine of Naxos is well known for its excellent quality, it was after all one of the gifts of Dionysus to the island.
Most tradtional tavernas offer wine from their own vineyard.
There are three surfing schools on the island, two near St. George beach near Naxos town and one near Orkos beach. Equipment and tuition are available at all three.
St. George beach is within walking distance from the town. It is pretty lively in the summer, and has a variety of seaside restaurants and cafes.
From the small port of Agia Anna daytrips to the southernmost beach of Kalandos are available during the season.
From May till Sptember regular day trips are available from Naxos to Delos/Mykonos and to Paros and Santorini.
One of the best books for sale in most of the local bookshops is "Naxos and the Small Cyclades" by Christian Ucke and Peter Graf.
It has a wealth of information with very detailed descriptions of different walks on Naxos.
"Central Naxos, A Guide with Map" published by the local Municipality, is also available in most bookshops.
Naxos town has a small medical center, quite a few chemists, several laundries, some good supermarkets and many smaller shops offering local produce.
In the early morning, at the upper part of the port, local farmers will often be selling their fresh farm produce.
Some specialist shops sell Naxos honey, excellent local cheeses, olive oil and dried fruit and herbs. Naxos also has some excellent jewellers and leathershops.
The Kitron liqueur is one of the specialities of the island, made from the leaves of a special citrus tree.
The traditional distillery of the Vallindras family can be visited in the village of Halki.
In Halki you will also find L'Olivier which sells beautiful stoneware ceramics with the main themes of olives and fish. The shop is beautifully appointed and a veritable treasure trove.
There is also a pottery in the village of Damalas where the local potter, Manolis Libertas, continues the family tradition.
