Joyce, aged 95, was rushed to hospital from Elvaston Lodge Nursing Home on 1.8.22 in a serious medical condition The hospital discovered that she was dehydrated, had low blood sugar and had a totally impacted bowel, (Faecaloma). She subsequently died on 6.8.2 Because of the circumstances, a coroner’s inquest was held. The coroner’s judgement was that at the care home there was no prior clinical examination of Joyce, and had there been, this would have found the faecal impaction at an early stage. The laxatives she was prescribed had then been stopped without clinical examination and thus medical approval, (at the inquest the consultant had said no doctor would have agreed to this in Joyce' s case). As a consequence, the coroner was not able to report the death as "from natural causes", because the decision by the care home to stop laxatives on July 23 was a contributory cause of death The family has been left distraught. Prior to this, the standard of care Joyce was receiving was shocking in every aspect, and only family visits to provide supplementary care made the situation tolerable. There was a complete lack of communication from the home, with a manager who was uncontactable when we tried to express our concerns.
