About Us

Chestnuts is situated in the quiet village of Low Moresby, two and a half miles north of the historic port of Whitehaven. With the town just 10 minutes in one direction, and the edge of the Lake District National Park 20 minutes in the other, we are situated in an ideal position for anybody wishing to experience all that the area offers.

The house itself is a family home beside farmland, with excellent views over the countryside and the Solway Firth to Scotland. We are five minutes walk by footpath to the local pub/restaurant or five minutes by car.

We can also provide accommodation for your small pets, should you wish to travel with them. An outbuilding has been specially built for this purpose. This is known as Norah's Ark.

For wildlife and photography enthusiasts, Chestnuts is home to four varieties of owls, which are housed in aviaries in the large garden. We are owl enthusiasts and are happy to show you around and tell you about the various birds. The garden bird feeders and wildlife friendly planting also attract a wide variety of wild birds and we are sometimes visited by wild owls, buzzards or pheasants.

We welcome walkers,cyclists
and bikers alike, we offer safe
off-road parking for cars, while
cycles and motorbikes can be locked safely in the garage.

In the spacious garden there is a wooden play-house with out-door toys and a sandpit. There's plenty of room for children to run around (or play football with Rosie our Border Collie) and for adults to relax.

Please be aware that we do have dogs and cats, plus various other pets, so if you have any problems with allergies, please let us know prior to your visit.

Close to major wedding venues in area.

We are five minutes' drive from Whitehaven Golf Course which is a very popular venue for weddings, baptisms, indeed any celebration. You can also play golf there, of course! We are five minutes' drive from Moresby Hall, again a very popular venue plus within easy driving distance of many local hotels which host large weddings and celebrations.

30 minutes from Wild Ennerdale

Ennerdale Valley is a beautiful unspoilt area of the Western Lakes and is a very popular walking site, although it still seems very quiet and peaceful when you are there. It has protected status and Wild Ennerdale is being developed, where the area is being "rewilded" and essentially given back to nature and wildlife.

45 minutes from Scafell Pike

Scafell is the highest mountain in England and looks down on beautiful Wasdale Valley. This holds the deepest lake and the smallest church as well as the highest mountain. At the foot of Scafell you can enjoy local ales brewed right there in a micro-brewery and enjoy what was voted recently as "Britain's finest view".

Close to West Cumberland Hospital

If you are coming to work for a while at West Cumberland Hospital, which serves West Cumbria and outlying areas, and need accommodation we can offer quiet private accommodation in peaceful surroundings and a friendly welcome at the end of a busy day. If you are attending WCH to visit a loved one, we are within 5 - 10 minutes from there.

20 minutes from Sellafield site.

Sellafield, the largest employer in the area, uses a lot of contract incoming labour from out of the area, as well as specialist scientists brought in to oversee development. If you are one of these, we can offer comfortable accommodation on a week by week basis with free Wi-Fi and excellent breakfasts.

Friendly personal service

We are a family home so we live on the premises. Retired from employment, we have time to be here most of the day to ensure your room is kept tidy and clean, refreshment tray refilled and bathroom kept spotless. Having lived in the area all our lives we can advise on where to go for sightseeing, shopping or to any specific place you need to visit.

Perfect for animal and bird lovers

We have a large variety of pets of our own, including our Border Collie Rosie and Westie Poppy. We have captive owls in aviaries in the garden and also have visiting owls on occasion. We run Norah's Ark where we look after pets from rabbit to reptiles, hamsters to hedgehogs when people go away on holiday. We are happy to show guests around our other "guests" if they are interested.

Testimonials

Lovely stay, made very welcome. Kindly ferried to and from the restaurant last night in the rain. Enjoyed a full breakfast which has set us both up well for the start of the C2C. Thank you very much.

Adrian

By far one of the best B and Bs I have ever stayed in. Norah and Bob were very hospitable and all the animals are lovely. All in all a most enjoyable stay and I would not hesitate to recommend to others.
