This is a nice cinema in the town centre. I went there with a few friends. The best place to sit is the middle to rear section of the seating, as the front few rows can leave you craning your neck upwards to see all the action. Check it out.

The damning reviews made thus far have their merits. There are far nicer places to watch films than Cineworld Luton. The staff can seem woefully unhelpful – the fact that the five till box office is invariably manned by a sole member of staff, with queues stretching out of the foyer (while his/her colleagues chat around the rip-off food bar) is particularly galling. The “Galaxy” complex in general, and the first floor arcade/cinema in particular, can be swamped by kids in hoodies – who can be bawdy and abusive, as is their wont, but generally just hang around steeped in teenage angst & acne. Poor sods. The concessionary stand food is a rip off.The annoying ads before the main picture can go on as long as half an hour… but, when you get there late deliberately to miss them, can be non-existent. However, despite its faults, the big screen is the best/only place to watch mainstream cinema in Luton.I have a Cineworld Unlimited membership – meaning I can watch as many films as I like/can at £11.99 a month. Whilst admitting the fact that I've seen well over 100 films at Luton in the past 18 months renders me a pretty sad individual – I must say that I've taken far more offence at some of the rubbish I've made myself sit through (Jumper, Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins, Speed Racer et al) than pesky kids in the audience. Popcorn, in my opinion, would be banned entirely from public screenings – but I have become more tolerant of damned paper bag rustlers. I have never had/seen food thrown – and only one film (i.e. considerably less than 1%) has been almost ruined by a gang of kids. Not that I doubt the story of the previous reviewer but, honestly, if I was in that position I wouldn't have stuck around for more abuse – if the staff couldn't/wouldn't help I would (and have) complained to Cineworld head office by letter (for free passes which allowed me to delay membership renewal for a couple of weeks). The trick to avoid being ripped off at the concessions stand is… don't buy anything. Stuffing one's face with popcorn isn't obligatory, and denying the temptation to do so may well improve the screening experience for other cinemagoers. Luton, some would argue, has never been better served by cinemas. My memories go back to watching Star Wars at the old Odeon in Bury Park, so they tend to be rose tinted. However, much as I liked it, the ABC in George Street was a dive by the end. For more info on the history of cinema in Luton, read Eddie Grabham's excellent “From Grand to Grove: Entertaining South Bedfordshire”, published by The Book Castle (and available from Amazon).

Back in the day, the Odeon cinema filled all of luton's film needs. It wasn't huge or paticuarly flashy, but it was in the centre of town and was easily accesible from a plenitude of nearby car parks. Then it shut. The CINEWORLD cinema opened, and eveyone was agog at how big it was. Unfortunatly, I don't think that this was a particuarly good move. Here's why:Parking: Although you could walk from a car park, it would take you about 10 minutes to get anywehere. The only car park that is close enough is the one specifically assigned to it, which is unnecerssarily expensive and small, dank and stinky. Hmm. Staff:Bright, ever-happy and helpful! Not. Rude, brash and surly, these figures only encourage bad behavior and ill-satidfaction.Youths:Give me strength. Roaming bands of youths stalk the foyer and ajoining arcade. Watch your pockets, watch your purse, and DONT speak to anyone you don't know.On the whole, not fun. Not fun at all.

Scared At The Cinemas!

I usually go tot he Showcase Cinemas, however, we decided to go to Cineworld as the film we wanted to see was on at a slightly better time. The first thing that put us off was the car park - which I know is probably not the cinema's fault - but it is extrememly inadequate for an 11-screen cinema, 4 restaurants, a shop, a hairdressers and a gym. We drove round for about 15 minutes just waiting for a space to become available. When we got to the cinema, there was a rubbish bin by the door, overflowing and not smelling particularly nice. The music playing in the foyer was very loud and was a heavy rock music! It was really offputting - something I'd expect to hear if I went to heavy metal night at the local pub! At the box office there was a TV screen missing (there was a large empty bracket on the wall with a mess of wires all over it,) so only half of the show times were visible. We already knew what film we wanted and at what time, which was obviously a good move as I couldn't see any film time leaflets anywhere. Anyway... we had bought a drink and got to our screen and the film was just about to start... only problem... there was no noise! Another customer had to go inform the management, although we had missed the first couple of minutes of the sound already! About 15 minutes into the film, we heard very loud shouting, swearing, laughing, coming in to the screen, as they came to the front, we saw it was a group of about 10 young kids (about age 13/14). They were shouting at thje top of their voices 'do you like your ******* film!'then they just stood at the front in the way of the film. I decided I should best go tell a member of staff as I didn't want to say anything to them myself. I told a member of staff who said she would ask someone to come up, but as I was going back into the screen 3 of the boys came right up to me saying had I grassed on them and they 'squared up' to me, swearing at me into my face. I was very scared, but they left the screen. I wasn't sure if somone was coming or not, but I wanted to tell them what those kids had done, so I waited near the door for a manager. When one came, I told him but he didn't seem bothered he then turned to the kidds who were out in the foyer and told them they could have another chance!! I couldn't believe it! They had threatened me, and scared me, not to mention ruining the film for every other customer and he just let them straight back in! The kids walked past me back into the screeen laughing about it, and (at this point I felt furious). I told the manager I couldn't believe he was not prepared to ask them to leave and that it was appalling!). He told me that I should calm down and just watch my film and said he didn't want to discuss it any more! So I went back in the screen and obviously the kids knew I had told on them so they continued to heckle at me and throw sweet wrappers/popcorn in my direction so we made the decision to leave. I thought this was absolutely appalling. I had gone with the intention of just wating a film quietly, whereas those kids had gone with the intention of distrupting the film and spoiling other people's enjoyment which, thanks to the manager, they had done. I will definitely not be going back there if this is how even the managers treat the customers.

Bring back The ABC or The Odean.

An unpleasant place to visit and watch a movie. Surly, uninterested staff mingle with a huge crowd of rabid youths. Many of the thronging crowd of youths do not seem to be there to watch a movie but to prey on the weak and pick-up the opposite sex. Built to an awful, American-inspired design it's jarring to the senses. The food's completely awful as is the service. Your movie will be ruined by shouted comments, abuse and thrown food.
