About

At the forefront

The traditions and values which first established Russell & Russell as the successful earlier pioneer of high quality legal services in Bolton and beyond continue to serve us well today. We still provide friendly, professional advice in the way a traditional high street law firm would but with a twenty first century approach to quality and service.

The practice now stretches across the North Manchester corridor and into Cheshire with two offices, including our Head Office, in Bolton, branch offices in Atherton, Bury, Farnworth, Horwich and Middleton and our associated practice with its office in the heart of historic Chester. A number of our departments provide national coverage to clients far outside our geographic locations.

With over 150 staff at our offices across the region, we are proud to deliver the best legal advice to our clients throughout our principal departments, which are:

Commercial
Crime, Licensing & Motoring
Conveyancing
Family, Childcare & Mediation
Personal Injury
Wills, Probate & Elderly Client Services
We have a number of dedicated departmental web sites which provide a lot more information about our services and the people you can expect to look after you when Russell & Russell act for you. Links to these sites are shown at the bottom of this and every page on the site.

We're also there when you need us – we understand that emergencies don't wait for us to open at 9:00am so all of our departments have emergency helplines, just in case.

Legal Pioneers

In 1887 William Russell, the son of a local timber merchant, started his own legal practice in the town of Bolton. He quickly established a reputation for being fair and diligent and soon attracted large clients including Bolton Union Permanent Benefit Building Society, one of the pioneers of the Building Society movement.

William Russell was a public spirited individual who contributed a great deal to local affairs, culminating in his election as MP for Bolton in 1922 with a majority of 6000. He was also a generous supporter of local charities.

His union with his younger brother, Walter Russell, in 1898 created the name Russell & Russell that has been at the forefront of Bolton's legal community ever since.

The future

The legal landscape is always changing and law firms face fresh challenges and threats to their business on a regular basis. The introduction of Alternative Business Structures (or “Tesco Law" as it has been dubbed), cuts to legal aid funding and the constant spotlight on Personal Injury law are just three of the challenges which Solicitors are currently facing.

It is those who think ahead, plan well and react positively to change who thrive and prosper. Here at Russell & Russell, we are confident that we have the right team in place to drive the business forward and not only meet the challenges we face, but use them to make our business stronger and more efficient.

We are always looking at emerging technology and new media to try and improve our efficiency and communication. We were one of the very first firms to offer online case tracking to clients for Conveyancing transactions. We run Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn accounts to try and reach our clients in as many different ways as we can and to actively pursue business opportunities. We use SMS text messaging to contact clients with updates and are looking at a range of new marketing initiatives including Bluetooth and WiFi communication to offer us as many possibilities as are available to keep Russell & Russell ahead of the game.

As the old adage says “the proof of the pudding is in the eating" – we have been around for over 125 years so we must be doing something right. Customer service is at the heart of all we do and we firmly believe that as we move forward, we will continue to offer our clients the highest quality legal advice at reasonable fees and with their best interests at heart.
