An amazing restaurant
I visited Sweet Mandarin on Saturday with my friends and we had a wonderful time - so much so that I'd highly recommend this restaurant. We love the Northern Quarter for a drink and now that all these restaurants are also springing up, we can also stay in the area to eat. I loved the look of the restaurant - its floor to ceiling glass - looks a bit like a trendy bar - which drew us for dinner.I ordered the spring rolls for starters and Mabel's Claypot Chicken with rice. The waiter also recommended Lily Kwok's curry (apparently the restaurant specials and based on the owner's grandmother's recipes) so my friend ordered that dish together with a chicken satay sticks for starters. There were six of us, so we each tried each others dishes. We thought the food was absolutely amazing. Its the best Chinese I've tasted in ages. My friends also thought the same.What I thought was brilliant was that the waiter was knowledgable, friendly about food and wine choices and the food did not disappoint. We'll be definitely going back to Sweet Mandarin. I'll also be buying the book about the family behind this wonderful restaurant tucked in the Northern Quarter.

Average...
After disappointingly finding that the Northern Quarter Bar and Grill was shut on a Sunday night, our hunger drove us to the nearest visible restaurant... the rather orange looking Sweet Mandarin. The six of us piled into the restaurant to be greeted by friendly staff. The menu consisted of dishes with names not dissimilar to those found in any average Chinese restaurant with typical south-east Asian influences.I ordered the sesame prawn Fingers (£4.20) which sounded a little more interesting that what actually arrived on my plate, sesame prawn toast. Perhaps they should cut the pieces of toast into strips or soldiers... For mains, I had Firecracker Chicken (£9) - chicken cooked with fried chilli peppers, chive buds, and fried garlic (close enough to the traditional recipe which should also include Shaoxing wine in the marinade) and sprinkled with cashew nuts. This was accompanied by egg fried rice (£2.50). The chicken was unfortunately not tender enough and the egg rice pretty average.I didn't have high expectations so wasn't that disappointed, more disappointed with my first choice of restaurant being closed. The service was attentive, quick and friendly but unfortunately I have to say that the food I had ordered was pretty average and uninspiring and I am certain you could find similar quality Chinese cooking for less in China Town.

Sweet Mandarin - Highly Recommended
We went to Sweet Mandarin this weekend and would highly recommend it. The food, ambience and service was fantastic. We had the Manchurian Fillet of Beef, Mabel's Claypot and Lilly Kwok's Chicken Curry - the best Chinese we have had in a long time. The red neon, dark wooden tables and the huge canvass of nature made the ambience warm and inviting. The waitresses were all very beautiful and elegant and attentive. Would definitely recommend this restaurant for a special occasion.
