Helping Children and Adults Improve Performance since 1994

Functioning of our sensory systems has a major influence on our performance and poor functioning may or may not lead to a diagnosis. The auditory and visual systems are the easiest to help and processing difficulties in these areas is often implicated in diagnosis such as Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) Hyperactivity, Asperger's and other Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and many others. Because of the concepts of "Brain Plasticity" (see Michael Merzenich and Norman Doidge) these senses can be helped and improvements in auditory and visual processing can lead to improvements in social, emotional, behavioural and academic performance.

Neuro-developmental Programme

During a Standard Assessment we gather information from a detailed questionnaire and an initial developmental screening. If appropriate, a full Diagnostic Assessment is offered covering gross and fine motor coordination, balance, patterns of motor development, detection and analysis of primitive and postural reflexes, laterality, oculo-motor functions and visual perceptual ability. This generates a Neuro-Developmental Delay Home Programme (NDP) that takes the client systematically through the different stages of development. The aim is to inhibit Primitive Reflexes that are still present and cause the emergence of appropriate Postural Reflexes for normal development to occur. Neuro-developmental difficulties are often associated with problems during pregnancy and birth process, early development, and accidents, trauma or sicknesses later in life. Any person of any age may suffer from Neuro-developmental problems and a remediation programme is effective for adults as well as children.

Lightwave Stimulation (LWS)

As well as its role in vision, light exerts strong effects on mood and behaviour. Our Light Therapy programme, known as Lightwave Stimulation (LWS) uses 20 minute sessions of low intensity, pulsed coloured light, through the eyes to address light processing deficiencies. These often correlate with learning, behavioural, visual perceptual, reading and social difficulties. Light entering the eye, is converted into nerve current, travels via the optic nerve, not only to the visual cortex but also many other brain centres including the pineal gland and the hypothalamus, the brain's master controller. Light thus effects not only vision, but also profoundly influences effective functioning of other systems, on which physical and emotional well-being depend. Striking changes in symptom reductions, performance, behaviour and mood can occur following LWS which may also help poor eating or sleeping patterns, socialisation, anxiousness, sadness, low self-esteem, overactive or impulsive behaviour.

Berard Auditory Integration Training (AIT)

AIT is a clinic-based therapy and completed at our Centre over a period of 10 - 12 days. We are able to provide AIT for children of 3 years of age and above. There is no upper age limit and we have helped many university students and older adults. The programme uses music with a wide frequency range, orchestral richness and well-defined rhythm which is then specially altered. Since we respond to pattern the modulation of the music makes it more difficult to anticipate what comes next. As a result of brain plasticity the auditory system becomes retrained, auditory processing improves and over-sensitivities diminish. This can result in improved performance ranging from speech improvement or even development, through to enhanced academic or social performance, improvements in balance, co-ordination and motor skills. AIT can be customised and is listened to through headphones. The individual listening periods are 30 minutes, twice a day with a minimum 3 hour interval between sessions.

Professional Practitioner Training (AIT)

Pauline Allen, the Founder of The Sound Learning Centre, was personally trained by Dr. Guy Bérard in France and is also authorised by Dr. Bérard to train other AIT practitioners. If you are interested in becoming a Bérard Auditory Integration Training (AIT) practitioner please contact us for further information.

Axxx Mxxx Ref. 7375 Feedback on Axxx from mother. Life changing for him. If it wasn't for you people … , not a day goes by that mum doesn't appreciate the help he got. Adam is 15yrs old now, and it’s easy to teach him. He is learning and moving forward and they know he will have an independent life. She and his father know the turning point, after about 9 months, something just changed, a curtain had lifted. His cognitive skills worked. He can add, he is beginning to read, feels good about himself. He wasn't adding 1 and 1 when he came to us. Said she may bring him back for some more treatment at some point and will be in touch. Plus happy to go on Parent Client Network list and do interview etc if we want.
