Building surveyors give advice to clients regarding the design and construction of new buildings and the maintenance, repair, renovation and conservation of existing ones. Their client base can range from individual house owners to large commercial and industrial companies. Much of the surveyors work involves the prevention of future problems rather than solving current ones with the exception of of assessing damage for insurance purposes. As such their role is more of an advisory one. Building surveyors in the UK will have undergone training through courses accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES) or the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).
