Asbestos products were widely used in the 1950's-1970's in buildings to add fireproofing and heat resistance. After the adverse health effects were fully discovered, blue and brown asbestos were banned in 1985 with white asbestos being banned in 1999. As many of these buildings were demolished, dismantled or renovated, there became a need for specialist firms who could oversee the safe removal of such material. The main trade association is ARCA- Asbestos Removal Contractors Association who represent the interests of asbestos removal contractors throughout the UK and promote working within current health and safety legislation.
