Architects conceptualise, design and oversee the construction of buildings and other standing structures. Aspects such as form, function and safety all play an important part in the formation of such designs and the architect should be well versed in all of these. Other aspects such as costing, customer advising, co-ordination and negotiation with contractors and timescale planning are also within the architects responsibility. To qualify as an architect, you would usually have to complete a five year degree course followed by at least two years experience in a professional architects office and finally a RIBA Part 3 Examination in Professional Practice and Management.
