Truro is the only city in Cornwall and is the administrative center for the county. Situated roughly nine miles inland from the South coast, it initially grew in size and population as a market city and port with vessels choosing the River Truro as an inland alternative to coastal ports due to its sheltered position offering protection from the elements. The city boomed during the tin mining era but in modern times is primarily a major tourist and shopping attraction and administration centre.
