How do I decide which security product best suits my requirements
A Brief History of the Concertina GrilleThe history of the concertina style of grille can be traced back to early Victorian times. This type of grille was used to secure a variety of openings including windows, doors and passageways and more commonly used as a lift door to prevent occupiers falling into the lift shaft. In fact they where a relatively common sight and were even used on ships and liners including quite possibly the infamous Titanic. Here at QSec we have found that our customers refer to the concertina type of grille by several different names. These include concertina grilles, retractable grilles, folding grilles, collapsible grilles, stacking grilles, fully tracked grilles and untracked grilles. We have also found that the word grille is often substituted for the word gate. Also the word Grille spelling varies from grille (with the "e" at the end) to grill (without the "e").Some Common Names Used to Describe the Concertina Style of GrillesConcertina GrillesRetractable GrillesFolding GrillesCollapsible GrillesStacking GrillesTracked GrillesUn-Tracked GrillesSliding GrillesScissor GrilleAccordion Grille The construction of these concertina grilles was very old school being manufactured from heavy grade steel with all metal moving parts and complex locking systems. The fact that some of these grilles are actually still in use today in museums and Victorian Arcades is testament to their robust construction and design. Frequently used within the industrial sector in factories, hospitals, schools and garages. Also used within the leisure industry including parks and piers and the retail sector installed to secure access into arcades, having a concertina grille located at each end of the mall. In fact in Leeds (West Yorkshire) evidence of these Victorian concertina grilles can still be seen today in shopping arcades within the centre of the city. In fact many of these old Victorian grilles have just been replaced by a more modern but similar concertina security grille, proving that "if the design works why change it?"The Modern Concertina Security GrilleThe more modern concertina grille that we are familiar with certainly owes much of its design and usability to its Victorian cousin. It shares many of the original features of the traditional concertina grille. Using tracks to run in top and bottom and having the feature of being able to fold back to a fraction of its size. The modern versions of the concertina grille although similar in many ways have moved on somewhat. The manufacture process today includes a galvanising process to protect the grille from the elements enabling the grille to be installed outside which is then followed with a coating of paint (powder coating). The powder coating process gives the grille a floorless finish and virtually any colour can be applied. Some concertina grilles are actually manufactured from aluminium which is very light weight and some may argue is not as strong as steel but testing has proved that these light weight grilles do indeed have similar strength and levels of security as their steel counterparts. Although to date approximately ninety percent of grilles tend to be white. To ensure the standard of the grilles is maintained, quality control measures are in place at various stages during manufacture.Quality Control and the Loss Prevention Council BoardThe concertina security grille of today has around ten different manufactures all producing the same kind of product in principal. From a customer's point of view apart from price and the quality of the grille you have ordered what else do you need to look for. The whole purpose of the grille is to offer some level of security. This is why concertina grilles today now carry a security rating, giving the consumer some idea of just what level of security the grilles they have bought actually offer. After the initial design stage and a prototype is manufactured it can be sent away for rigorous testing by the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) to see what level of security it should be rated at. Currently two levels exist with level one being offered by numerous manufactures and giving the customer a security grille that has insurance approval. Level two grilles are few and far between the criteria involved to obtain a level two certification is rather extreme hence not many manufacturers even attempt to produce such a grille. What About The Installation ProcessNot only are the grilles tested to ensure they meet certain physical qualities to enable them to pass the LPCB testing but they must also be installed in an approved way. There is no point in opting for an Insurance approved security grille if it is not installed correctly. Therefore the LPCB also stipulate that the installation adheres to their strict guide-lines. Insisting that certain sized fixings are used depending on the substrate the grille is being fitted to etc. Concertina grilles within the security industry are frequently referred to by their original product name "Trellidor" which was manufactured in South Africa. Approximately twenty five years ago they started to supply companies within the UK with the original Trellidor concertina security grille. Now in the Year 2010 the concertina grille or folding grille call it what ever you prefer has probably been around for one hundred years or more. Its function hasn't really changed, to protect property from thieves and in some instances as a safety barrier to prevent injury to people the concertina grille we are familiar with is here to stay.
