Northampton is the county town of Northamptonshire, on the banks of the River Nene. Considered the largest town in England, Northampton was traditionally considered a centre for shoemaking and other leather work but these industries have virtually disappeared, making way for new enterprises such as distribution and finance. Its town centre offers high street shopping as well as three modern indoor shopping centres and Britain's largest market square which dates back to 1235. Popular attractions in the area include Northampton Racecourse, Northampton Museum and Art Gallery and Althorp House is also a major attraction.
