You need to be 17 and have a valid provisional licence. Complete a D1 form from the Post Office and send it to the DVLA (DVLNI in Northern Ireland) with your passport or birth certificate and a passport-sized photo as ID. If you live in England, Scotland or Wales you can also apply for your provisional licence online. When applying online you may still be required to send additional documentation if you do not meet all the online criteria. Apply for it up to three months before your 17th birthday and you could book your first lesson for the big day! Driving Standards Agency research shows that the current average is 45 hours of tuition, with an additional 22 hours private practise to pass. Your instructor will give you an idea of how long you are likely to need after your first lesson. You can help keep this low by taking two-hour lessons and following our easy tips for practise with parents or relatives.
AA driving school recommends 2 hour lessons. In two hours, you'll have time to take in what the instructor says and put it into practice. And that could cut down the number of lessons you need, helping to reduce the overall cost. With one-hour lessons you often spend more time recapping on the last lesson and preparing for next time than you do learning! Once you've passed, you'll also be entitled to loads of special offers and deals on other AA products and services including AA Car Insurance and AA Breakdown Cover.
AA driving school is the only national driving school where you are guaranteed to learn with a fully qualified driving instructor. While many other driving schools have instructors training 'on the job', the green badge in the front of every AA instructor's car is your promise of the highest tuition standards.
