Prior to World War One, Agutter's Family ran a Hardware and Merchants Store in London. The store stocked every imaginable item and in those day's included Bait and Fishing Tackle. Between the two Great Wars the business continued until being Bombed twice in World War Two. At that time between both Wars the Name Norman's was making it's name for Motor Cycles and Bicycles. Normans the Family based business in Ashford for Bikes employed at one time over 500 staff. Today The Company now known as Paramount and Norman Agutters has still one of the largest Plating and Engineering Plants. Some years later after the Company sold Norman Bikes to Rayleigh. The Company continued in Engineering and in the mid to late seventies bought Modern Arms Tooling and Machinery. In the post wars years for Agutters the family business demised and members of the family took up different professions. Alastair Agutter Great Grandson to the Family business founder, had learnt a great deal from his Father and Grandfather in using his hands with tools. His passion was Angling, and started at the tender age of 5. At the end of the 1960's Agutter began making his own rods and carrying out many repairs for his friends in Angling. At that time some of his older customers gave him cane rods to repair and this was the start. In his spare time he read about cane and began to understand the making of it. He took a part time position with Going Bros Rodmakers to learn more about his new trade. Agutter through his Angling began winning Competitions, and in his rodmaking strived for making the best rods. To him due to his up bringing like many, British was best. It was a bitter pill to him that the large UK Rod Manufacturers were so far behind in quality as to their American Cousins. The old companies were trading on a reputation of name only and not quality. Agutter moved to london after leaving Full time education and took a Clerks position with a London Solicitors. At that time Norman's were still manufacturing large quantities of fittings to the trade, but the Americans were now producing fittings and ferule joints from Nickel Silver. Agutter shortly moved on from his place of employement and joined an Insurance Company. His sole objective was to raise money for his rodmaking. He was now starting to get frustrated customers due to order books. Towards the end of the 70's he took the plunge and relied on an income from rodmaking. He set up premises in the centre of London. Norman Agutters today is in fine hands. The Company makes excellent products and caters for every persons budget. Today they make custom made Cane Rods for Authors and well known personalities. In our time we have made rods for Royalty, The House of Lords and Commons, Diplomats, the Duke of Wellington, The National Fly Team, World Champions in Fishing and many more.
