Working From Home

The opportunities for working from home are becoming more common. With the speeds of the internet now making remote access a useable reality. We can sit at home connect to the office via the internet and work as if we were in the office. Distance is really no object, I have clients that regularly connect from hotels all around the world, or whose senior management live in France. The secret to all this is a combination of different types of secure connection. The technology is similar to that used by the banks for Internet banking. Then of course there are the small businesses who have an office either in their house or an office in the garden. It's not all roses though, when I talk to small business owners and for that matter remote workers they all agree that the biggest problem is knowing when to stop work. Sounds strange but it's true when you go to work at the end of the day you pack up and go home. When you work from home you don't have that definite divide, and the lines start to blur. Before you know it your thinking "I'll just finish this" and when you look up it's 9pm!The other problem is the "calling computer" you finished work at 6pm, it's now 9pm and your walking past the "office" room and you think "I wonder if they answered my email, I'll just check" another late night. Having an office separate from the house really helps as you can physically "go home" even if it is only over the patio. Then there are the funny things, we have had our office next to the house for a number of years and somewhere in the garden a bird has learnt the ring of the main support telephone. I can't count the number of times I have rushed back to the office to answer the phone only to find it was that @%** bird. I have worked out how to tell it's the bird. It seems it only rings in groups of two. So if the phone stops after two rings I know it's the bird. It must call twice then wait for an answering call and I suppose sometimes the phone obliges. One of the biggest recent changes is of course the advent of the smart phones, the Blackberry and the iPhone. Suddenly you can receive your emails, contacts and calendar from the office just like a laptop, and from the companies view at very little extra cost.
