The Nursing and Midwifery Council regulate all midwives in the UK however or wherever they work âÃÂàall midwives follow the same Code of Conduct and have to prove they regularly update their knowledge and skills to a safe standard. Midwives are autonomous practitioners in their own right, and can choose to work on a self-employed basis. The Independent Midwives at Kent Midwifery Practice, have chosen to work outside the NHS as we feel this is the best way we can practice fully as midwives and be truly âÃÂÃÂwith womanâÃÂÃÂ.
It is unfortunate but in the NHS women often see several different midwives throughout their pregnancy and do not know who will care for them in labour. The evidence from research clearly demonstrates that women who know their midwife have shorter and easier labours and all outcomes are improved âÃÂàwomen, babies and midwives all benefit. All antenatal care is given in the comfort and privacy of your own home. Appointments are not hurried so you will have plenty of time to ask questions and discuss all aspects of care. A trusting caring relationship will develop until you and your midwife become professional friends. As well as a physical check to make sure you and your baby are well, we spend time discussing any worries or anxieties you may have. We ensure you receive up to date evidence based information. This will enable you to make fully informed choices and help you to feel totally in control at all times. When you go into labour we will be with throughout until your baby is born. You may decide to have your baby at home or we will accompany you to hospital.
