The wines

RED Country of origin: Chile Area: Cachapoal Valley Vinery: Puenta del Inca Grape variety: Cabernet Sauvignon Official Description: This wine has a deep ruby colour, berry aromas and ripe berry fruit flavours on the palate. It will go well with lamb and pork dishes, with cheese or can be appreciated just by itself. Alan's Verdict: This is a pure Cabernet Sauvignon. I find this wonderful red wine to be a full flavoured, high alcohol wine. A smooth, mellow, wine for which I would happily pay between £12 and £14 in any restaurant. Producing wines like this there is no wonder that Chile is enjoying a surge in popularity.

The wines

WHITE Country of Origin: Chile Area: Chile - Central Valley Vinery: Puenta del Inca Grape variety: Chardonnay Official Description: This Chardonnay has a pale golden colour with delicious aromatic and tropical fruit flavours on the palate. It may be drunk as an aperitif or may be served with a wide selection of dishes including chicken, fish and cheese. Alan's Verdict: I must confess that I like my white wine ice cold. I always have. This superb chardonnay, which incidentally has a very high alcohol content at 13.5% abv, loses none of it's flavour or character when chilled to my liking. With a meal I prefer a decent quality white, none of this old stuff about white with this and red with that, you should drink what you like, and I really like this wine. As a guide, in a retail outlet I would be happy paying around the £6 mark so in a restaurant we are talking between £11 and £13.
