Bedford is the county town of Bedfordshire and lies on the River Great Ouse. Historically a market town for the surrounding agricultural areas, Bedford saw a boom in engineering works during the industrial revolution and later in brick works who recruited many Italians in the 1950's, leading to the Italian influence in the town with deli's, Italian restaurants and grocery shops selling Italian produce still apparent to this day. Modern Bedford is highly regarded as a base for London commuters due to its excellent rail links with the capital but the town has plenty to offer itself with easily accessible shopping, dining and entertainment.
