INFORMATION

Polam Hall School is an independent UK day and boarding school in the North East of England. We offer continuity of education from 3 - 18 in a happy, friendly and responsive community where self-confidence flourishes. Our pupils are taught in small classes where their individual strengths are recognised and their particular needs support.

Junior School

'Children love to learn' in our Junior School where the unique talents of every child are nurtured in a vibrant, happy and friendly environment. Girls are encouraged to reach their individual potential in a school where learning is fun and where enthusiastic, dedicated staff help all pupils achieve the highest possible academic standards. Our girls are well cared for in small classes (max 18) where the teachers are able to encourage each girl and understand her individuality. A wide curriculum based on reading, writing and mathematics and other subjects such as music, art and physical education. The girls gain a good grounding in all these subjects, which prepares them well for the future. French is part of the curriculum from Reception onwards and the girls learn through activities and song. On moving into the Junior School the girls have an extended curriculum including Mathematics, English, Science, French, History, Geography, Information Technology, Religious Education, Art and Design and Music. They benefit from experienced and enthusiastic specialist teachers. The availability of extracurricular activities widens even further from Junior School age with the possibility of joining Fencing, Gymnastics, Self Defence to name but a few. The girls are able to have private lessons in a wide range musical instruments.

Senior School and Sixth Form

Classes are small and, with enthusiastic staff, every opportunity is given to each and every girl. A structured and caring environment encourages each girl to achieve her potential. The girls follow a general syllabus in the first 3 years of senior school, making their GCSE choices in the second half of Year 9. Staff are always keen to help with these choices and the school runs a Careers Morning with representatives from various professions and universities being available allowing parents and girls to talk about the different careers with someone who really knows. Students in the Sixth Form choose from a wide range of AS and A level subjects. Scholarships (for both internal and external candidates) are available at this level. Sports and Music scholarships are also offered. Sixth Form students have their own study and common room facility with kitchens in Plantation House and they no longer have to wear uniform. The majority take on additional responsibilities such as running the school Charity Committee, being House Captains and prefects. The Sixth Form run a school council (made up of representatives from each year group). The council come together to discuss school life and put forward ideas. All follow a General Studies course. A comprehensive careers programme gives students guidance in making University choices and preparing for interview and all have the benefit of a personal tutor, closely overseen by the Senior Management staff (which includes the Head of Sixth Form). Regular monitoring and target setting is given to each student to aid their progression through the A level specifications and the many challenges of Sixth Form life.
