Andrew Pickard initiated the company in September 1986, predominantly as a specialised supplier of drawing office equipment to architects and engineering companies. In January 1987 a chance call realised a whole new potential market in the supply of site office furniture and equipment. This followed on course by expanding the customer base to the construction industry and subsequently sourcing suitable suppliers and manufacturers of such equipment. By the end of 1987 Universal Office Supplies had successfully completed its first two major installations of contract site office furniture and equipment. From this point on Universal was to carve out a niche market in a specialised supply of equipment to construction, building and civil engineering companies throughout the entire United Kingdom. A large majority of the customer base now being major blue chip companies.
urther to this the company opened another option for customers in offering both new and fully refurbished second hand furniture. The stock had grown to an extent that the warehouse was relocated to Marsh Road, Lords Meadow Trading Estate, Crediton, Devon, EX17 1EU at a size of approximately 35,000 square feet, plus office facilities, that have now increased to a sales staff of 10 on this site alone. In June 1999 we invested heavily with the profits of the growth and opened a northern depot in Halifax. This was to service quicker and more efficiently our customers in the north of England, Scotland and Ireland, Wales being split coverage from both depots. It is within this depot that the refurbishment has grown with extra facilities for spraying and waxing along with a full re-upholstery department.
Following the success of our growing business and the high costs in distribution we decided in 2006 to invest in the biggest yet of our depots at Steventon, Oxfordshire with a warehousing space in excess of 75,000 square feet. This we thought to be a great central location for the distribution hub in the south of England, with easy access to London.
