Some translation companies and search engines offer a “free translation” service. It can be of use in looking at letters and short documents, but its limitations are considerable and these need to be recognised: it is a rough guide to subjects rather than meaning. This is sometimes referred to as "machine translation" not the same as memory translation; the two should not be confused. Machine translation is the process by which a software programme will translate text from one language to another: Machine translation into English can produce some witty and amusing outcomes. Machine translation can be obtained on the web. It is not (and is unlikely to become) more than a rough guide since the process is basically word-by-word. More generally a machine translation will give an idea of what the text is about in terms of subjects included rather than the meaning. It can be a worthwhile step, for example, for screening in-bound email in foreign languages, to check which merit further attention or translation

Once you have produced a document with a desktop publishing system, you can output it directly to a printer or you can produce a PostScript file which you can then take to a service bureau. The service bureau has special machines that convert the PostScript file to film, which can then be used to make plates for offset printing. Offset printing produces higher-quality documents, especially if colour is used, but is generally more expensive than laser printing. Alternatively Total Language Solutions can produce high resolution PDF's for DTP translations, so long as original link images and fonts are supplied then these are embedded into a PDF (Portable Document Format) which can be used by most lithographic and digital printers.
